Cristiano Ronaldo and company secure a direct round of 32 spot.

The Colombia national football team had a strong fight against the Portugal national football team for their third and final group stage contest of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Los Cafeteros have never been held to a goalless draw at the flagship tournament, but Selecao das Quinas has made this possible now. It was a strong show against the South American nation and it was still not enough to get past the Portuguese.

Cristiano Ronaldo have finished second in Group K and have now secured a direct spot in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup. Even though they did not lose, it surely was a poor attempt by such a stacked team.

Five important things we learned from this match:

1. Colombia finish top of Group K

With a draw against Selecao das Quinas, the Colombia national football team have now topped their group and will be ready for the knockout stage now. They constantly came up with pressure against Portugal, but were unable to get through. It was also Colombia’s first-ever goalless draw at the FIFA World Cup.

2. Portuguese defence stands strong

Despite 26 attempts on the goal by Los Cafeteros, the combination of Nuno Mendes, Renato Veiga, Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo did a good job in the backline. Ruben Neves, in the first half, played an important role in the defence. But they need to polish up their skills, as they allowed the Colombians to take many chances.

3. Portugal failed to control the tempo

The Portugal national football team once again did not look organised while holding onto the ball. At one moment, it took around 29 seconds to reclaim the ball. The combination of Ruben Neves, Vitinha and Bruno Fernandes did not work out for them today. Selecao das Quinas will be looking to fix it ahead of the round of 32.

4. Composed Colombia looked unstoppable

Although the Néstor Lorenzo-led side did not score a goal, they looked like a better side on the field against the Cristiano Ronaldo company. They attacked well, retained the ball well and defended fantastically. The Colombian national football team did not allow many chances to Portugal’s attack and this will continue to remain their strength.

5. Final third needs polishing for Portugal

With names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Felix, Pedro Neto and Rafael Leao, the Portugal national football team were not very impactful in the final third against Los Cafeteros. The midfield combination also looked quite off and this also became a problem for them. Seleção das Quinas at the round of 32 are going to face a tough challenge and will be looking to work on their tactics.
