Mexico is the first nation to secure their spot in the round of 32.
With all 48 participant teams having played at least one game in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, contenders for the round of 32 are emerging in the second round of group-stage games.
Once the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage is over, the emphasis will move to the round of 32 and the first games in the knockout round.
The top two teams from each of the 12 groups, as well as the eight best third-place finishers, will proceed to the round of 32.
A handful of teams have already put themselves in a strong position to advance to the extended knockout round. The new structure rewards early momentum more than ever.
The round of 32 lasts from June 28 to July 4, with the victors of each match progressing to the round of 16. Here’s how possible Round of 32 matchups are shaping up as the Group Stage moves into the second round of play.

We already have a member who clinched their place in the round of 32. It’s one of the co-host nations, Mexico. El Tri swept wins in their first two group stage games to secure a place in the round of 32.
They began their FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over South Africa. Then they maintained their winning run with a 1-0 victory over South Korea. It helped them become the first national team in the competition to reach the round of 32.
