Top five countries with most Copa América titles
These countries have won the Copa América on numerous occasions.
The CONMEBOL Copa América famously known as Copa América is the top-flight football tournament for national teams from South and North America. The competition was founded in 1916 and is one of the oldest running football competitions to date. The tournament earlier had a 12-team roster and then shifted to a 16-team format in 2016.
The extremely physical nature of South American teams and their style of football makes the competition very difficult to win. The tournament has seen numerous legends over the years such as Diego Maradona, Pele, Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr, and many more. Continental championships have been won by some national teams on multiple occasions.
Let’s take a look at the top 5 countries with most Copa América titles.
5) Chile – 2
The Chileans did not achieve success in the continental tournament up until 2015 when they finally won it for the first time. Chile were runners-up on four occasions in the past which were in 1955, 1956, 1979, and 1987.
Chile’s first taste of glory came when they beat the mighty Argentina on penalties on their home turf. The 2015 title was a historical one since it was their first one but Chile did not rest. The very next year, Chile once again beat Lionel Messi’s Argentina on penalties to grab their second title.
4) Paraguay – 2
La Albirojja are a surprising team in this list. Paraguay have won the tournament two times and been runners-up on six occasions.
Paraguay won their first Copa América title in 1957, beating Brazil 3-2 in the finals. Paraguay won their second title in 1979 after the play-offs ended in a tie. Eventually, the tie ended 3-1 on aggregate handing Paraguay their second Copa América title.

3) Brazil – 9
The Seleção are perhaps the most famous and successful national team in the world. The Brazilian football team have been a conveyor belt and produced numerous talents consistently over the years.
The Brazilians despite having previously pulled out of the Copa América tournament on 9 different occasions and sending their B – teams in a couple of editions have racked up 9 Copa América titles.
One of Brazil’s most famous and dominating win was in 1949 when they beat Paraguay 7-0 in the finals. They have been runners-up on 12 occasions with the most recent being in 2021.
2) Uruguay – 15
La Celeste have many national accolades to their name. Uruguay are a very small country with an approximate population of just 3.5 million. Uruguay are the national team to win the first edition of the FIFA World Cup and Copa América.
Uruguay are one of very few nations which have dominated much of the tournament from it’s first edition back in 1916. They have won the tournament a staggering 14 times from 1916 till 1995. Unfortunately, since 1995 Uruguay have just won only 1 Copa América title which was back in 2011.
1) Argentina – 15
The Argentinians have had their fair share of victories as well as losses in the Copa América. Argentina alongside Uruguay are the national teams with the most Copa América titles (15). However, they have lost 14 finals as well.
Argentina’s dominant era came back in the 1940s and 1950s. They won four Copa América titles in the 1940s era which includes winning the Copa América for three consecutive years from 1945-1947.
1945-1947 saw Argentina’s national team being unbeaten and Norberto Mendez made a name for himself during this era winning three Copa América titles with Argentina. Argentina’s Norberto Mendez remains the all-time top scorer in the history of the tournament with 17 goals.
