The Portuguese star scored a brace in their win against Armenia.
On 6 September 2025, Portugal defeated Armenia 5-0 in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, with Cristiano Ronaldo taking centre stage once more. Portugal dominated the game from the beginning to the end, and the 40-year-old scored twice.
Joao Felix’s goal in the tenth minute gave Portugal a quick start. Joao Cancelo’s goal in the 32nd minute followed Ronaldo’s close-range finish in the 21st minute to double the lead. Before Portugal scored the fifth goal later in the game, Ronaldo added a spectacular goal in the 46th minute.
Cristiano Ronaldo reaches unprecedented goal contributions tally

In addition to surpassing Argentine rival Lionel Messi (36 goals in 72 games) on the all-time goal-scoring list in World Cup Qualifiers, Cristiano Ronaldo’s second goal brought him to 140 goals for his country.
With 38 goals in 48 games, Ronaldo is now one goal behind Carlos Ruiz of Guatemala, who leads the field in World Cup qualifying goals.
Not only is Cristiano Ronaldo on the cusp of breaking his record, but his two goals against Armenia have now seen him reach 1,200 goal contributions in his playing career.
He has 942 career goals and 258 assists, which is a significant landmark in his playing career. At the venerable age of 40, he has time and time again demonstrated that he isn’t slowing down and will continue to dominate the goalscoring chart at the international level.
Cristiano Ronaldo will next return to action on 9th September when Portugal play Hungary in their last September qualifying game, and the striker will be looking to overtake Ruiz in the goal-scoring list in World Cup Qualifiers. This will also likely be one of Ronaldo’s final World Cup qualifiers of his career.
When the FIFA World Cup 2026 is staged in the US, Canada, and Mexico, it is likely to be Ronaldo’s final opportunity to take home the prized trophy.
