The Magpies have added another player to their injury list.
Dan Burn, a defender for Newcastle United, is expected to miss six weeks of action due to a broken rib and ruptured lung sustained during Sunday’s derby loss to Sunderland.
In the first half of Newcastle’s 1-0 loss at the Stadium of Light, Dan Burn, 33, was hurt in a 50/50 tackle with Sunderland right-back Nordi Mukiele.
As both players dove in to grab the ball, Mukiele’s knee struck Dan Burn’s side, earning him a booking. After some initial treatment, Burn attempted to continue, but a few minutes later, Fabian Schar took his position.
The centre back was admitted to the hospital after he “struggled to breathe” at halftime, according to head coach Eddie Howe.
The lung becomes punctured when air seeps into the area between the lung and the chest wall. The lung collapses as a result.
Dan Burn faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines
Dan Burn is expected to miss a number of games during the holiday season and into the new year, and Howe has now confirmed how long the player will be out with the injury.
“It was a big blow for us because I think he’s been excellent in recent weeks. It’s a rib problem and an issue with his lungs so we wish him well and it will be around four to six weeks out.”
Other Newcastle injury update
Emil Krafth, a fellow right-back, is rehabilitating from a knee ailment, Kieran Trippier is recuperating from a hamstring issue, and centre-back Sven Botman has already been sidelined due to a back condition.
Schar and Malick Thiaw are expected to play together in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup quarterfinal at St James’ Park against Fulham.
However, Newcastle do have many veteran options to relieve the strain on the two or on full-backs Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall, who have just got back from injury.
How long is Dan Burn expected to be out?
According to the reports, he is set to be out for six weeks.
Who else is injured for Newcastle?
Krafth, Trippier and Botman are still out.
Where do Newcastle stand in the league?
They are 12th in the league.
