Uruguay faced Spain at the Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan, Mexico, in their final group stage game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As things stand now, only one goal separates both sides.

A loss will eliminate Uruguay from the World Cup, as they have accumulated only two points in two games. La Celeste played draws against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. Thus, a win or at least a draw is mandatory for the South American side to stay alive in the tournament.

However, something unfortunate also happened in the match for Uruguay. In the 42nd minute, Fernando Muslera’s error led to the only goal of the match.

At half-time, Muslera was withdrawn. Sergio Rochet replaced the 40-year-old in goal, and it’s highly likely that we have seen the last of Muslera’s appearances for his country.

In Uruguay’s second game of the group stage, Fernando Muslera was beaten by a long-range free-kick opener before making another error leading up to a goal.

Against Spain, Uruguay’s Fernando Muslera made another painful error. He fumbled Alex Baena’s shot, which went into the goal after having contact with him. Muslera has also set an undefeated record as the only goalkeeper with 5+ errors that led to goals in World Cups since 1966.

Fernando Muslera has had a disastrous FIFA World Cup campaign; however, he cannot be blamed solely for the side’s lacklustre performance at the summer competition. The 40-year-old has made 19 appearances for Uruguay in the World Cup and has solidified his name as one of the most experienced and successful South American goalkeepers.

However, his potential farewell from the spot has not been in the way he would have expected.
