Didier Deschamps and Co failed at the semi-final stage against the crafty Spain.

Didier Deschamps has been the boss of the France national football team for as long as one can remember. But after losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 semi-final questions were raised about his exit.

The France team led by Didier Deschamps were one of the tournament favourites before arriving in Germany. But the reality was going to be very different. The team started their business in Group D alongside Austria, Poland and Netherlands. A lacklustre display of football saw them score none from open-play even though they managed to reach the knockouts with a ‘lucky’ second-place finish.

Their fragile performance continued further. In the Round of 16, they met Belgium. Guess how they managed to get past them? Once again without scoring by themselves. Jan Vertonghen netted in the wrong goal to help Les Bleus move further. This time, in the quarter-finals, Portugal came in their way. Post a goalless draw, Deschamps’s men managed to send Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. packing after the penalty shootouts.

Something different was about to happen in the semi-finals as they met Spain. La Roja were upbeat from the very start and shattered the dreams of millions of French people. The 2-1 defeat led to questions about the future of Antoine Griezmann and even Didier Deschamps was pressed.

Deschamps’s answer on the day of defeat was, “Ask my president. I’ve just lost a semi-final. Do you think I’m already going to answer?.”

The French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo has finally answered. Diallo backs the national team coach to continue further, “Deschamps is STAYING as France coach until at LEAST 2026.” The Euro 2024 has been a harsh taste in the mouth of the supporters, not because they lost at the last hurdle but rather the way that they played even with such quality players.

Didier Deschamps will have an opportunity to make a ‘great’ comeback and build on the trust of the president and the federation at the next major event, the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Will France play any poorer than they did at the Euros or will they bring back the memories of the 2018 World Cup winning campaign? The time and Didier Deschamps’s men will give the answer.
