Ecuador are ranked 23rd in the world. They also boast one of the tightest defences in the World Cup qualifiers. They shocked the entire world when they just conceded 5 goals in 18 games in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers.

This is a must-win game for both teams. Ecuador are coming after a 1-0 defeat to the Ivory Coast in the opening game. Before they lock horns with Germany in the final match week, a big win against Curacao is crucial for keeping their knockout hopes alive.

Talking about Curacao, the least-populated country ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, shocked the world when they equalised 1-1 against Germany. But the four-time world champions went on to create havoc, and Curaçao suffered a humiliating 7-1 defeat in the opening matchweek.

They are led by Dutch gaffer Dick Advocaat, who is also the oldest gaffer in FIFA World Cup history.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Room plays for Miami FC and has previously won the MLS with Columbus Crew and the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven. His non-stop communication and organisation of his centre-backs would be crucial for Curacao in the next game.

The 39-year-old veteran Ecuadorian goalkeeper plays for Huracán in Argentina’s top flight. He made three saves in the last game against the Ivory Coast, but a late goal from Diallo saw them leave Philadelphia empty-handed without even a single point.

Pacho is coming after winning back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles with PSG. One of the few naturally left-footed centre-backs, Pacho also has a tall aerial presence and is nothing short of a nightmare for opposition strikers.

The Zurich full back etched his name in golden letters after scoring Curacao’s first-ever World Cup goal against Germany in the opening match week. He played for the youth teams of Juventus and PSV Eindhoven before moving to the Swiss top flight with Zurich.

Enner Valencia is Ecuador’s all-time leading scorer in the FIFA World Cup after scoring 6 goals. He has immense experience playing in top leagues. Before making a move to Pachuca in Liga MX, he plied his trade with top European clubs in the world, like West Ham United, Everton and Fenerbahçe.

No one is better than Obispo to contain a player like Valencia. The Curaçaoan defender joined the youth setup of PSV Eindhoven when he was just seven. Since then, he has been a vital part of PSV Eindhoven and is coming off a decent season with the Dutch giants, having even won four Eredivisie titles with Eindhoven.

2. Piero Hincapie vs Sherel Floranus

Hincapie is coming after a highly productive loan spell with Arsenal and even played the entirety of 120 minutes for the Gunners in the UEFA Champions League Finals. He is a big match player, and given his extensive experience playing in top European leagues, he will be a key player to watch out for in Ecuador’s FIFA World Cup campaign.

Floranus plays for Dutch outfit PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie, and he will face a formidable opponent in Hincapie. He is a low-block, physical fullback who would be looking to make crucial overlapping and accelerated runs from the wings.

1. Moises Caicedo vs Tahith Chong

This will be a mouth-watering player battle to keep an eye on. He was part of the Chelsea team that won the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League. Ecuador’s youngest World Cup goalscorer, Caicedo, has a brilliant understanding of the game and reads opposing passing lanes cleverly.

Tahith Chong is the only player in the Curacao team who was born on the island of Curacao, in Willemstad. Chong spent his early days at Old Trafford and also won the Manchester United Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award for the 2017–18 season
