The Pharaohs are the Group G leaders ahead of tonight’s match.

Egypt take on Iran in their final Group G clash in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington, on June 26. The Pharaohs currently lead the group standings with four points, and can seal the top spot with a win in tonight’s game.

The African giants made a slow start to their World Cup campaign in this year’s expanded 48-team edition in North America. They secured a 1-1 draw with Belgium, with Emam Ashour’s opener being cancelled out by a second-half own goal from Mohamed Hany.

However, the Pharaohs roared back with a dominant 3-1 win over New Zealand. Mostafa Ziko, Mohamed Salah, and Trezeguet found the back of the net for Hossam Hassan’s side, with Finn Surman’s goal being a consolation for the All Whites.

The results took the African side to the top of the table. They can seal a place in the Round of 32 with a win tonight. Even a draw will be enough if Belgium fail to better their goal difference in the match against New Zealand, or if the Red Devils lose that game.

Egypt (4-2-3-1): Mostafa Ahmed Shobeir; Mohamed Hany, Mohamed Abdelmonem, Rami Rabia, Ahmed Fatouh; Mohanad Lasheen; Emam Ashour; Mostafa Ziko, Mahmoud Saber, Trezeguet; Mohamed Salah (c).

Substitutes: Mohamed El Shenawy (gk), El Mahdi Soliman (gk), Hamza Abdelkarim, Hossam Abdelmaguid, Ibrahim Adel, Tarek Alaa, Marwan Attia, Nabil Dunga, Hamdi Fathy, Karim Hafez, Haissem Hassan, Yasser Ibrahim, Omar Marmoush, Zizo.

Thoughts on the lineup

Hassan stuck with a largely unchanged starting lineup. Mostafa Ahmed Shobeir has been solid between the sticks and retains his place in the team. Mohamed Hany and Ahmed Fatouh start in the full-back positions. Nice defender Mohamed Abdelmonem starts in central defence, and he is paired with Rami Rabia, who replaced the injured Hamdy Fathy.

Emam Ashour and Mohanad Lasheen form the two-man midfield pivot for the Pharaohs. Mahmoud Saber makes his first appearance in the tournament and starts in an advanced role, tasked with being his side’s creative outlet.

Mostafa Ziko and Trezeguet on the wings. Surprisingly, star forward Omar Marmoush is dropped to the bench, with talismanic skipper Mohamed Salah playing in the number nine role.
