The goalkeeper suffered an injury in 2-2 draw with Chelsea

Unai Emery has mixed news on Emiliano Martinez, the custodian for Aston Villa, according to reports originating in Argentina.

During halftime of their latest Premier League match, Aston Villa supporters had their hearts firmly in their mouths. They were ahead 2-0 against Chelsea thanks to goals from Morgan Rodgers and Marc Cucurella’s own goal, but they did not see Martinez, their beloved custodian, come out for the second half of play.

The World Cup winner was substituted at halftime by backup keeper Robin Olsen after he was observed receiving treatment in the first half for what looked to be a hamstring issue.

Villa’s game took a turn for the worse as they lost Youri Tielemans to injury in the first half and then wasted their two-goal lead. Only VAR saved them from losing 3-2 and they ultimately managed to escape with a 2-2 draw against Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

Emery issued a warning to his other players to step forward after the match, but he would not comment on the severity of the injury.

Thanks to news from Emi Martinez’s native Argentina, a much-needed update has now been provided. The goalie has strained the muscle but has not torn his thigh, according to Infobae [via Sport Witness].

He could make his comeback against Liverpool on May 13th, but this injury is expected to keep him out of play for at least two weeks.

They further state that Martinez, 31, intends to come back for the second leg against Olympiacos, which is scheduled for ten days from now, as stated by individuals close to him. It implies that Villa will only be missing his assistance for two games, assuming he is able to make it.

Aston Villa currently hold the final Champions League spot, seven points ahead of Tottenham, and a far easier schedule than their rivals.

However, Ange Postecoglou and company still have two games remaining, starting with a midweek match against Chelsea. Thankfully, domestic issues appear to be mostly behind them.

However, the Villa supporters will be pleased to learn that Martinez may return for European matters in a little more than a week.
