Can Thomas Tuchel bring the Cup home for The Three Lions after six decades?

When England scored four in the opening game against 2018 finalist Croatia, many felt that maybe Thomas Tuchel could bring the Cup home for the Three Lions after a long wait of nearly six decades since last winning the trophy back in 1966 and coming close to reaching the finals in the FIFA World Cup 2018.

But in the last two games, England failed to dominate much. Though they finished atop Group L with seven points and were the only unbeaten team in the group, expectations are naturally quite high to dominate every game when you have such a star-studded squad that even bench players are worth millions.

They played a goalless draw against Ghana before getting the better of Panama 2-0 in the last game, the same team they thrashed 6-1 back in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Harry Kane has been their top scorer, scoring three goals, and Jude Bellingham has also scored two so far.

England finished atop Group L with seven points, and in this article, we find out their path to the FIFA World Cup finals and how their bracket could potentially look. We analyse everything from their opponent’s form, head-to-head and key players to watch out for.

England’s round of 32 opponent – DR Congo

Route To FIFA World Cup 2026 final

DR Congo were on the verge of getting eliminated from the World Cup as they were trailing behind Uzbekistan, but the Congolese players scored thrice against the White Wolves to emerge as the best-ranked third-placed team in the tournament. These two sides have never met previously.

They have been a very difficult team to beat, and they even held Portugal to a 1-1 draw. A lot of their players compete regularly in the top English flights, including the likes of Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa, Sunderland midfielder Sadiki, Burnley defender Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan Bissaka.

England’s possible round of 16 opponent – Mexico/Ecuador

The Three Lions would hope Ecuador stun Mexico as they are a relatively easier side to play. However, Ecuador are coming after defeating Germany, and they boast of one of the best defences in South America, when they literally just conceded five goals in 18 games in CONEMBOL World Cup Qualifiers.

What if the upset does not happen? England would face an in-form Mexico in their own backyard, who have been in sublime form and are one of the very few teams to win all of their group stage games. They are ranked 14th; they have scored six, and no team has been able to score against them so far.

Date, Time, and Location: 6th July (5:30 am IST) – Mexico City Stadium, Mexico

Who could England face in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026?

If England gets the better of Mexico, the path still does not become easier, as in all likelihood, they are set to face another big team. There are high chances that Brazil might be the favourites to face England in the quarterfinals and that could be an epic showdown between Real Madrid teammates, Vini and Bellingham.

But what if Norway gets through? After all, they face the Ivory Coast in the Round of 32, and if they beat Brazil/Japan, there can be Harry Kane vs Erling Haaland in the quarterfinals.

Another possibility is Japan pulling off an upset against Brazil. The land of the rising sun has celebrated too many World Cup upsets and if the Blue Samurai beat Brazil, they will be the favourites to beat Norway and face England in the quarter finals.

England’s probable opponents in the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Since there is no possibility of Messi vs Ronaldo in the quarter finals, there are high chances that England would now face a South American giant in the semi finals, unless a major upset happens.

There are high chances for Argentina vs Colombia in the quarterfinals, but given the way Colombia has performed, it would be a difficult fixture to predict.

All possible opponents for England in the semifinal: Argentina, Colombia, Switzerland, Ghana, Australia, Egypt, Cape Verde, Algeria

The road to the finals would not be easy for England, but at least in all possibilities, they would not face more than two teams in the top 10 rankings in their route to the finals. Interestingly, as it seems, England would not face any European team in their path to the finals, unless a major upset happens.

The road is relatively easier than teams in the other bracket, and England would most likely face France, Spain or Portugal in the Finals.
