The Three Lions are now unbeaten in their last games against the Vatreni.
Led by Thomas Tuchel, the England national football team faced the Croatia national football team for their opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The high-scoring game took place at the Dallas Stadium.
The Englishmen were put to a stern test at the beginning of the encounter. They lacked control of the game, but went on to gain some rhythm after scoring their first goal in under 15 minutes. They started to control the game much better, but still saw some problems. They have started their campaign on the world stage with a win and this will keep them confident.
The Vatreni now know what mistakes they must not have to repeat in the upcoming fixture, or they can bid goodbye to the grandest stage of them all.
Five important things we learned from this match:
1. Harry Kane, the star of the show

The Bayern Munich forward continues his sensational goal-scoring run on the biggest stage of football. He scored the opening goal of the game, then completed his brace in the second half to put England in the lead once again. Harry Kane also went on to block a shot in the final moments of the game, restricting Croatia to just two goals.
2. Squad depth a strength for England
The England national football team have begun their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a win. Even though they looked a bit out of control in the first half, they rectified the mistakes in the second. Thomas Tuchel made the necessary changes in the second half, which helped them secure a 4-2 victory. Harry Kane scored a brace, with Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford scoring a goal each.

3. Defence a problem for both sides
Despite some known names in the backline, the Three Lions conceded two goals in the first half. They did not repeat the same mistakes in the second half, but some damage was done. Similarly, the Croatian national football team wasn’t able to contain the attack by the Englishmen and conceded four goals in total. They crumbled under pressure here.
4. Croatia lacked quality in attack
The Zlatko Dalić-led side conceded two, but scored two in return in the first half itself. They only got four chances in the first 45 minutes and it worked out decently for them. The Croatia national football team still need to do a lot more when it comes to the final third. Martin Baturina and Petar Musa scored a goal each, but it was not quite enough.
5. Are Thomas Tuchel’s tactics enough?
The Three Lions underperformed in the first half. They were exposed in the backline and conceded two goals, which could’ve been avoided. Declan Rice didn’t deliver quite enough in the midfield today, other than an assist. Elliot Anderson and Jude Bellingham did well in the midfield.
Overall, the Englishmen did well in the second half. Thomas Tuchel’s men must avoid making the mistakes of giving the ball away, as it can be a problem for them going forward.
