This was the first-ever encounter between these teams.

For the opening game of Group K, the Portugal national football team squared off against the DR Congo national football team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The entertaining game took place at the Houston Stadium.

The Roberto Martinez-led side continued their undefeated run after their 1-1 draw against the Leopards in their first group stage game of the mega competition. It was an underwhelming performance by the star-studded Portugal national football team, who are coming in after winning the Nations League 2025. They performed well in the European qualifiers and expected a better start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.

The DR Congo national football team will not be disappointed with their start in the flagship tournament. They have never secured a point on the grandest stage of them all before and this time around, they did so, that too against a stacked Portuguese lineup.

Five important things we learned:

1. Portugal’s underwhelming attack

Roberto Martinez started things off with Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva in the attacking front. They were looking fine until DR Congo equalised at the end of the first half. The Portugal national football team failed to put in a top performance in the attacking front. In seven of their goal attempts, only one was on target.

2. Joao Neves announces himself on the world stage

Joao Neves played a crucial part for the Portugal national football team. He scored the opening goal for his side on his FIFA World Cup debut. The 21-year-old will continue to play a crucial role both in the midfield and the attacking front for Portugal going forward in the tournament.

3. First World Cup goal for DR Congo

DR Congo have now registered their first goal at the grandest stage of them all. This is their second participation in the FIFA World Cup. Yoane Wissa scored an important equaliser for the Leopards at the end of the first half. This later helped them secure a 1-1 draw against the Portuguese side.

4. Portuguese midfield continues to impress

Even though Bruno Fernandes did not perform up to the mark here, the overall balance for the Portugal national football team in the midfield was quite good. Vitinha and Joao Neves are also going to be crucial. At the end of the game, Portugal had 75% of ball possession. They still failed to bag three points and only settled for one. Their performance in the final third was underwhelming and they lacked quality in the defence too.

5. DR Congo unlucky on break

Only if DR Congo had transitioned more quickly, they might have gotten a chance to take down Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in their opening game of the FIFA World Cup 2026. They need to work on that or they might even get knocked out of the group stage of the mega competition.

Who scored the opening goal for Portugal in FIFA World Cup 2026?

Joao Neves against DR Congo.

Who scored DR Congo’s first ever FIFA World Cup goal?

Yoane Wissa against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Porgual.
