Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to win another international trophy

The UEFA Euro 2024 began on June 14 and is now nearing the end of the group stages, with only matchday 3 to be dealt with. Germany kicked off the event against Scotland, to win 5-1 in Group A.

The tournament has a total of six groups namely from A to F. A total of 24 nations began the battle to be crowned the European champions. Nevertheless, the final is still far on schedule as it will be held on July 14 at Olympiastadion Berlin, the route to the final and probable opponents is still known to us, at least it is getting clearer with every game for the round of 16.

Portugal are one such side that have secured their place in the last 16 on the backing of two wins from two games. They secured the first three points against Czechia by winning the game 2-1 in added time. The 21-year-old Francisco Conceição came to the rescue for 2016 Euro winners on matchday 1.

In the second group F battle, they took on Turkey at the Signal Iduna Park. Two goals inside the thirty minutes in favour of Roberto Martínez’s men led to a 3-0 victory by the final whistle. The country led by Cristiano Ronaldo are more than assured of a top place finish as they take on Georgia, last in group standings, on matchday 3.

Unless something out of the box happens in their game and the Turkey vs Czechia game, we will see Portugal take on third-placed sides of either Group A, B or C in the Round of 16. The location, date and kick-off time are certain but their last 16 opponents aren’t yet confirmed.

On 2 July, 12:30 AM IST, Deutsche Bank Park will be hosting Portugal and their Round of 16 opponents. The third-placed team in Group A is already known, as it is Hungary. Group B is still very much wide open with chances of Italy, Albania and Croatia finishing third. Group C’s third place is even more complicated as by the end of matchday 3, we could even see England in the mix.

For the round of 16, basically, the top two teams of each group will qualify along with four best third-placed teams. For Portugal to face either of Group A, B or C third-placed sides, they will have to be among the four best third-placed sides overall.

At the moment of writing, it could be anyone from Hungary of Group A to Italy, Albania and Croatia from Group B to any side of Group C, which includes England, Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia.
