Top eight famous twin football players

These twins have played for some of the top and famous clubs.

In football, we have witnessed a relativelely less number of twin football players who have featured for many big teams in the sport. However, it’s very rare and not that subtle to find twins in football, as many times they play different sports.

Some of the biggest names in football, both past and present, have the unusual distinction of being twins whose siblings have played the beautiful game. With this, we take a look at the top famous twin football players.

The top eight famous twin football players

8. Megan & Rachael Rapinoe

As a two-time World Cup champion, Olympic gold medallist, and Ballon d’Or winner, Megan Rapinoe doesn’t need an introduction.

She had a successful tenure with the Portland Pilots team at the University of Portland, where she played while studying. Rachael then played football professionally in Iceland with Stjarnan and served the United States at the under-23 level.

7. Ramiro & Rogelio Funes Mori

Ramiro Funes Mori, another set of identical twins, may be familiar to you from his three-year tenure with Everton (2015–2018). The defender had a difficult time in Merseyside due to injuries, but before leaving the club, he was successful in Europe with Villarreal.

Rogelio, his identical twin, has established a prosperous career, primarily with Monterrey in Mexico. He has also performed in Portugal and Turkey.

6. Hamit & Halil Altintop

In addition to being a former football player with one of the most recognisable long shots in the sport, Hamit Altintop is Halil Altintop’s twin. Hamit and Halil, identical twins, both had prosperous, elite club and national careers.

The attacker, Halil, enjoyed successful stints at Kaiserslautern and Schalke and is pursuing a career in teaching. Meanwhile, Hamit is currently serving on the board for the Turkish Football Federation, even though he never quite reached the pinnacles of Real Madrid.

5. Radja & Riana Nainggolan

You are all familiar with Nainggolan, the insane, mohawked midfield threat who, in his prime, showed off his skills for Cagliari, AS Roma, and Inter Milan.

However, he also has a twin sister. During Radja’s tenure at Roma, Riana Nainggolan played futsal and football professionally.

4. Lars & Sven Bender

Despite having excellent careers in the Bundesliga, Lars and Sven Bender—both versatile defenders with 19 and seven caps, respectively—were never properly appreciated by the German national team. Both Lars and Sven retired from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021. The latter is now a manager at SpVgg Unterhaching.

3. Rafael & Fabio Da Silva

Before Rafael da Silva and Fabio joined Manchester United in 2008, scout Les Kershaw saw them at Fluminense and called them “two little whippets.”

Fabio found it difficult to establish himself at left-back, but Rafael was able to establish himself as a regular at United under Sir Alex Ferguson before departing for Lyon. In 2014, both of them departed permanently. However, Fabio relocated to Wales to sign with Cardiff City, while Rafael went to France.

Rafael and Fabio, who are currently 35, last represented Botafogo and Gremio, respectively.

2. Frank & Ronald de Boer

The De Boers were a pair of very gifted twins who existed before the Timbers.

As someone with the third-most caps for the national team, a UEFA Champions League, and league titles with AFC Ajax and FC Barcelona, Frank’s reputation as a player cannot be disputed, even though he hasn’t fully succeeded as a manager at the highest level.

Ronald too won the Champions League at Ajax and LaLiga with his twin brother at Barcelona. But he, on the other hand, accomplished so while playing forward rather than as a defender.

1. Jurrien & Quinten Timber

Despite the fact that twins are uncommon in football, Jurrien and Quinten Timber recently became the third pair of twins to play together for the Dutch national team, indicating that the national team might be famous for producing twin players.

As the Oranje defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Nations League, the twins both entered the game as replacements and shared the field. Quinten, who plays for Feyenoord and has won both the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup thrice, is somewhat less well-known. Meanwhile, Jurrien Timber is well-known for playing football at Arsenal.
