Last season’s winner had kept 16 clean sheets.

The 2024-25 English Premier League has kick-started. Twenty clubs are having intense clashes, with close encounters. While we are seeing goalfests in some, many matches are being decided by the heroics of goalkeepers.

Goalkeepers, the backbone of any team, have often been the game changer in many instances. Last season, we saw teams like Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur rising to the ranks due to brilliant defence and excellent goalkeepers. While giant clubs like Manchester United failed for howlers inside their own half.

On that note, let’s have a look at the top five contenders for the Golden Glove in the Premier League 2024-25:

Top five favourites to win Premier League 2024-25 Golden Glove

5. Nick Pope (Newcastle United)

The 32-year-old Newcastle United goalkeeper has a good chance of clinching the golden glove this time. Last season, he seemed to have a chance as in just 15 Premier League games, the player gifted his team six clean sheets. The Magpies had a very good run in the first half when he was the starter before being ruled out for a shoulder injury. This time, the side will expect him to stay fully fit and protect their goalposts.

4. Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa)

Emi Martinez aka Dibu is not only Argentina’s saviour but also a messiah for Aston Villa. It was his brilliance in one-on-one situations, apt reflexes and confidence, particularly during the penalties, which saved Villa on numerous occasions.

The Argentine ranked sixth last season in terms of most clean sheets, with nine. His role in helping Aston Villa qualify for the UEFA Champions League was also very important. He, with quality defenders like Pau Torres and Lucas Digne, definitely creates a tough defence.

3. Alisson Becker (Liverpool)

The 1.93 m Brazilian goalie has changed Liverpool’s fate since his arrival in 2018. He continues to be equally consistent to date. Alisson is one of the best in the business. He had eight clean sheets last season in just 28 games. He is shining this time too.

Besides being a great goalkeeper himself, the Brazilian is being guarded by some of the most high-profile defenders in the league, like Joel Matip, Trent Alexander Arnold and of course Virgil van Dijk. The 2018-19 and 2021-22 season’s winner is a favourite to win the Golden Glove.

2. Ederson (Manchester City)

Another Brazilian goalie, Ederson is also a contender. He had 13 clean sheets in 33 games last season and will look to better the tally this time.

One of the biggest plus points for Ederson is that he plays with a team that has one of the best defence units in the EPL. A team with stars like Ruben Dias, Nathan Eke, Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis, and a champion tactician like Pep Guardiola. With so much armour, he is left with little to do, and whatever threats he faces, he deals with them efficiently.

1. David Raya (Arsenal)

The 28-year-old was the best goalkeeper last season. It was his calibre that made Arsenal face only 29 goals in the entire 2023-24 season. Raya also managed 16 clean sheets, which was the highest, hence he received the Golden Glove.

This time it would be interesting to see if he would maintain his tally efficiently. David Raya guarded by William Saliba, Jurrien Timber and Kieran Tierney is a nightmare for any player from the opponent’s forward line.
