FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E final standings

Ecuador beat Germany in the final matchday of Group E.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage is nearing its conclusion, with the fate of the 12 groups being decided by three double-headers over four days. Germany faced Ecuador, and Curacao took on Ivory Coast on June 25, with the results shaping the Group E final standings.

Germany suffered a big setback on the final matchday, losing 2-1 to Ecuador. Leroy Sane had put Die Mannschaft ahead in the second minute, but Nilson Angelo restored parity with a wonderful strike in the ninth minute. Gonzalo Plata’s 77th-minute goal sealed La Tricolor’s victory.

Despite the setback, the four-time champions finished as the group winners, tied on six points with Ivory Coast but with a superior goal difference. The Ivorian side, meanwhile, secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Curacao, ensuring a second-placed finish.

The latest victory took Ecuador to four points, even though they still finished in third place and outside the top two spots. Curacao, on the other hand, ended their debut campaign in the quadrennial tournament at the bottom of the group. The Blue Wave had just one point to their name, which they earned in a goalless draw against La Tricolor.

Germany and Ivory Coast sealed direct qualification to the Round of 32 stage, having finished in the top two spots in the group stage. As Group E champions, Germany will face a third-placed team in their Round of 32 fixture in Foxborough on June 29. Ivory Coast, meanwhile, will face the Group I runners-up in Arlington on June 30.

Ecuador, despite their spirited performance against Germany, remained in third place, outside the direct qualification spots. However, they remain in the hunt for a knockout place if they finish as one of the eight best third-placed sides in the group stages.

Although this could change as the remaining groups conclude, Ecuador’s record of four points and a decent goal difference means that they are in a very good position to qualify for the Round of 32.

Curacao, however, have seen their first-ever World Cup campaign come to an end in the group stage. The players gave a good account of themselves against much stronger sides and can return home as national heroes.
