Matchday 5 of the FIFA World Cup has seen some amazing performances from teams widely regarded as underdogs. Here’s a recap of what’s happened so far, starting with the earliest match.

Cape Verde’s remarkable defensive display earned them a goalless draw against reigning European champions and World Cup 2026 favourites Spain.

The small African nation, sitting in a strong 5-4-1 structure, dulled a Lamine-Yamal-less starting XI to the point where Mikel Oyarzabal, Spain’s centre forward, didn’t touch the ball for the first half hour.

Saudi Arabia withstood a second-half onslaught to put Uruguay at bay, resulting in a 1-1 draw that ties everyone in Group H on one point. Egypt held on for a draw against Belgium in a tense battle in the Group G opener.

Four beautifully executed team goals saw Iran and New Zealand share the spoils. Four World Cup matches in a day ended in draws for the first time since 1958.
