The English top-flight has witnessed many memorable matches in its history.

The most significant and memorable moments from the last day of past Premier League seasons are examined in this article.

16. Sergio Aguero’s title-winning goal – 2011/12

As expected, the most competitive title battle came down to the last second and was only decided by Sergio Aguero’s goal, which was one of the most spectacular in Premier League history.

It is still the only occasion the Premier League has ever been won on goal differential. It was a memorable way for Man City to win their maiden title.

15. Ilkay gündoğan steers Man City to title comeback – 2021/22

Man City, who started the day with a point ahead, fell behind 2-0 against Aston Villa, while Liverpool, the closest contenders, were daring to hope when they tied Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The two sides were tied on points at that time.

However, three goals in five minutes in the second half, including two from Ilkay Gundogan, completely changed the course of the match. City managed to win 3-2 and beat Liverpool in the race by one point for the second time in four seasons. The Reds went on to win 3-1 against Wolves.

14. Jonas Gutierrez helped Newcastle United after recovering from cancer – 2014/15

After beating cancer, Jonas Gutierrez, who was already a favourite at Newcastle United, solidified his legacy by leading the team to Premier League survival.

After recovering from cancer, Gutierrez returned to action in March. On the last day, he scored Newcastle’s first goal against West Ham United. He then scored their second goal to ensure their Premier League survival, igniting raucous and heartfelt celebrations across St. James’ Park.

13. Stoke City handed Liverpool one of their worst defeats in their history – 2014/15

In the midfielder’s final game for his beloved team, Stoke delivered an unexpectedly devastating defeat, making it a day to remember for both Steven Gerrard and Liverpool.

Fifty-two years after Liverpool last gave up six goals in a single match, Stoke led 5-0 at halftime and added another goal late in their historic Premier League victory.

12. Ten-goal thriller for Ferguson’s send-off – 2012/13

Only once in Premier League history have both teams scored five goals or more. Sir Alex Ferguson’s final appearance in the record books was a fitting way to cap off his tenure as Manchester United manager.

Ferguson’s team and West Bromwich Albion played a 5-5 goalfest at the Hawthorns in his 1,500th and final match of the Premier League.

11. Five teams fight to avoid relegation – 2010/11

With relegation still a possibility, five teams that were only one point apart went on a wild ride last day in the Premier League.

With a 3-2 victory over rivals Wolves, Blackburn Rovers, who started the season in 15th place, were never truly in danger of falling below the bottom three.

Despite starting second-bottom, Wigan Athletic secured their spot in 16th place by scoring through Rodallega’s late winner in the game against Stoke City.

Wolves were trailing 3-0 at halftime on goal differential, but two goals in the second half helped pull them back to safety, originally just on goals scored, before other outcomes kept them up by one point.

Blackpool and Birmingham City were the unfortunate two teams to lose their Premier League position as a result. At one point in the afternoon, they were both safe, but losses to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively, contributed to their demotion.

10. Chelsea score eight against Wigan to clinch title – 2009/10

Chelsea’s 8-0 thumping of 10-man Wigan Athletic to end their campaign came at an ideal moment to set a club record in the Premier League.

The crushing win, which featured a hat-trick from Didier Drogba, derailed nearest rivals Manchester United’s three-year tenure as champions and guaranteed them their first Premier League title since 2006.

9. Fulham relegation escape – 2007/08

Fulham looked dead with three games remaining, five points from safety, until an incredible comeback resulted in one of the most incredible, unlikely relegation escapes.

It started with Fulham, who were in danger of relegation after falling behind 2-0, pulling off an amazing 3-2 comeback victory at Man City.

They then moved out of the bottom three heading into the final day with a 2-0 victory over Birmingham.

Relegation opponents Reading and Birmingham scored goals elsewhere during that time, pushing Fulham back into the drop zone until Danny Murphy’s late strike altered everything. That goal helped seal the 1-0 victory at Portsmouth, keeping the Cottagers ahead on goal differential.

8. West Ham and Wigan cash in on at Sheffield United’s expense – 2006/07

West Ham and Wigan pulled off stunning victories to rescue themselves, while three other teams still feared relegation going into the final day.

West Ham needed just one point to escape relegation following an amazing end-of-season surge in performance. Carlos Tevez’s goal gave the Hammers a historic victory at Old Trafford. They managed to remain up despite the daunting task of travelling to the recently crowned champions, Manchester United.

In a matchup for the final relegation slot, Sheffield United visited Wigan, and a 2-1 home loss dropped the Blades by barely one goal on goal differential.

In a strange turn of events, David Unsworth scored Wigan’s game-winning penalty just months after leaving Sheffield United.

7. Lasagne spoiled Spurs Champions League berth – 2005/06

Tottenham Hospur, who were in fourth position going into the last day of the 2005–06 season, went to West Ham with the goal of matching Arsenal’s performance at home against Wigan in order to earn their first UEFA Champions League berth.

However, several first-team players became ill with suspected food poisoning the night before the game, with many of them attributing their illness to the lasagne they had.

Spurs manager Martin Jol claimed that ten of his players had been sick all night. West Ham triumphed 2-1 thanks to a late goal from Yossi Benayoun.

6. West Brom’s great escape – 2004/05

After being last in the Premier League at Christmas, West Brom still ended up among the teams to remain up.

At the beginning of the final day of the campaign, Bryan Robson’s team was five points from safety on December 25, 2004, and they were still at the bottom.

However, the Baggies avoided demotion on a historic last day because of their 2-0 victory over Portsmouth and the loss of points by the three teams above them: Crystal Palace, Southampton, and Norwich City.

5. Arsenal’s invincible run – 2003/04

Even though Arsenal had already won the title, they still had to defeat Leicester City to guarantee they finished the season undefeated.

Arsenal became the first, and now the only, side to finish a Premier League season undefeated thanks to goals from Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira in the second half.

4. Chelsea beat Liverpool and book European spot – 2002/03

The match at Stamford Bridge was crucial to Chelsea and Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

At kickoff, the only thing separating them was goal differential, with Chelsea holding the coveted fourth position.

A 2-1 comeback victory helped them hold onto it to secure a spot in Europe’s top club competition. Two months later, Roman Abramovich reportedly decided to purchase Chelsea.

3. Man Utd treble success – 1998/99

On a nerve-wracking final day, Manchester United won the Premier League, securing the first trophy of their historic treble.

Following Spurs’ unexpected lead at Old Trafford, the top two teams, Manchester United and Arsenal, were momentarily tied on points and goal differential.

However, Man Utd’s 2-1 victory made sure they were reclaiming the title from the Gunners, who defeated Aston Villa 1-0.

2. Blackburn title success – 1994/95

Only a thrilling finale allowed Blackburn to celebrate a historic victory. This was also the first time the Premier League title battle went to the last day.

Rovers were leading by two points at the beginning of the day. Both their match against Liverpool and Manchester United’s match against West Ham were tied at one apiece going into the final moments. Everything was going according to plan.

However, Jamie Redknapp’s free kick in the 90th minute gave Liverpool a 2-1 lead, meaning Manchester United only needed one more goal to defeat Blackburn to win the championship.

But shortly after Redknapp’s goal, the final whistle blew. The relieved Rovers were declared the first Premier League winners since 1914 by a single point.

1. Everton’s last day relegation dramas – 1993/94, 1997/98 & 2022/23

Everton have had to survive tense Goodison Park finals three times before keeping their place in the Premier League.

They had to pull off a spectacular comeback from a 2-0 deficit against Wimbledon in 1993–94 to win 3-2 and escape the bottom three.

They moved up on goal differential to finish 17th in 1997–98. A 1–1 draw with Coventry City enabled them to pass Bolton Wanderers, who suffered a 2-0 loss at Chelsea.

For the majority of 2022–2023 as well, Everton were in danger of relegation. They were only declared safe following a final-day 1-0 victory over AFC Bournemouth, which put them two points above the relegation zone.
