France vs Senegal: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

France are currently placed third in FIFA global world rankings.

The Senegal National Team, which found itself at the centre of controversy during the 2025 AFCON Final after leaving the pitch in protest over disputed refereeing decisions that denied them the title, will once again take centre stage in a major tournament as they begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Senegal were eliminated by England in the Round of 16 at the previous FIFA World Cup and will be hoping to go much further this time around. Their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign begins with a difficult test against France at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA, on June 16.

France enter the tournament as one of the favourites to lift the trophy, thanks to the immense quality within their squad and their recent World Cup pedigree. The French were crowned champions in 2018 and finished runners-up in 2022. Having come agonisingly close to retaining the title four years ago, they will be determined to go one step further and reclaim football’s biggest prize.

With several world-class players from both sides expected to take the field, the match promises to be an exciting contest. Here are five key battles that could determine the game’s outcome.

5. Krepin Diatta vs Desire Doue

Krepin Diatta began his career as a winger but has successfully transitioned into a full-time right-back for both club and country. He is expected to start in one of the most challenging defensive roles in world football, marking France’s highly talented and unpredictable attacking players.

Desire Doue is likely to start on the left wing and could prove to be a difficult opponent for Diatta. The French youngster possesses outstanding dribbling ability, explosive pace, and the flair to beat defenders in one-on-one situations, qualities he has consistently displayed during his time at Paris Saint-Germain.

Doue may have an advantage in this matchup, particularly if Diatta pushes forward to support attacks and leaves space behind. However, Diatta’s physicality, defensive work rate, and recovery speed could help him limit the impact of the French winger, making this battle far more competitive than it appears on paper.

4. Adrien Rabiot vs Idrissa Gana Gueye

Adrien Rabiot is expected to start in midfield for France in a box-to-box role, allowing Aurelien Tchouameni to remain deeper and provide defensive cover. Standing in his way will be Senegal veteran Idrissa Gana Gueye, who has been a key figure in the national team midfield for over 15 years and has accumulated more than 130 international appearances.

Gueye is a traditional defensive midfielder who excels at reading the game, tracking runners, and making crucial tackles and interceptions in dangerous areas. Rabiot, meanwhile, combines physicality with technical quality and is particularly effective at retaining possession under pressure.

One of Rabiot’s biggest strengths is his tendency to make late runs into the penalty area, adding an extra attacking threat from midfield. Gueye will need to be alert to those movements throughout the game if Senegal are to limit France’s attacking influence from central areas.

3. Micael Olise vs Ismail Jakobs

Michael Olise, arguably one of the best right wingers in world football at the moment, will be making his FIFA World Cup debut after establishing himself as one of Europe’s most influential attackers in recent years. Last season, Olise registered 31 assists across all competitions while scoring 22 goals. He also heads into the tournament in excellent form after netting a hat-trick for France against Northern Ireland in their final warm-up match.

The French winger is expected to come up against Ismail Jakobs on the left side of Senegal’s defence. Jakobs is highly regarded for his recovery speed, defensive awareness, and ability to make crucial tackles. Olise’s exceptional dribbling, pinpoint crossing, and ability to cut inside and unleash dangerous shots will test Jakobs throughout the match.

However, the Senegalese full-back’s disciplined positioning and ability to quickly close down space could make this one of the most intriguing contests on the pitch.

2. Sadio Mane vs Jules Kounde

Sadio Mane, who is expected to start on the left wing for Senegal, could be involved in a fascinating individual battle against Jules Kounde, France’s likely starting right-back. Both players are among the best in their respective positions and will be eager to gain the upper hand for their teams.

Mane thrives on making inverted runs from wide areas and using his movement to drift into central positions. However, he is likely to face a stern challenge against Kounde, a natural centre-back who has established himself as a reliable right-back thanks to his excellent one-on-one defending and positional awareness.

Mane may also find it difficult to exploit spaces in transition, as Kounde often maintains a deeper position rather than committing too far forward, given his relatively limited attacking output in the final third.

1. Kylian Mbappe vs Kalidou Koulibaly

One of the standout battles of the game will be the contest between Kalidou Koulibaly and Kylian Mbappe. Although Mbappe is expected to operate as a false nine, his movement and striker-like instincts make him one of the most dangerous attackers in the tournament.

While Mbappe’s pace and movement inside the box will pose a major threat, he is unlikely to enjoy a physical or aerial advantage against Koulibaly. The experienced Senegalese defender will have the difficult task of tracking Mbappe, who frequently drifts into wide areas to create confusion among opponents and open up space for his teammates.

This is where Koulibaly’s leadership and organisational skills become crucial. He will need to ensure Senegal’s defensive line remains compact and disciplined whenever Mbappe drifts away from central areas. The French captain is also devastating on counterattacks, and Koulibaly will hope that his recovery pace, despite being in the latter stages of his career, remains sharp enough to deal with those situations.
