Four huge players out of preliminary Euro 2024 squad
Julian Nagelsmann, the manager of Germany, has excluded four key players from his preliminary Euro 2024 team. This summer, Germany will host the competition and is the third-most likely team to win, behind France and England.
When UEFA decided last month to raise squad sizes from 23 to 26 players, Nagelsmann’s job of selecting a team for the tournament was somewhat alleviated. He has now announced a tentative 27-man roster, with one player expected to withdraw prior to the June 7 cutoff date for squads.
Furthermore, the news has revealed a few unexpected things. Mats Hummels, a 35-year-old defender for Borussia Dortmund, is not in the team.
This is true despite his stellar play for Dortmund, who on June 1 will play Real Madrid in the Champions League final. Hummels also competed for Germany in the 2014 World Cup, which they won in Brazil.
Timo Werner, who has only scored two goals since joining Tottenham on loan from RB Leipzig in January, is also not included.
Leon Goretzka, a midfielder for Bayern Munich, was additionally excluded despite his team’s poor performance.
