This was the second-ever clash between these clubs.

Germany took on the Ivory Coast for their second group stage outing of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Toronto Stadium witnessed this intense clash.

The four-time world champions started off on an underwhelming note. They need to fix that for the upcoming games, or they can face tough competition against the top contenders. The German national football team secured three more points and have now secured a spot for the round of 32.

The Julian Nagelsmann-led side faced some issues in the final third and the Ivory Coast did fancy their chances in the first half, but lost all three points after a poor performance in the second half.

Five important things we learned from this match:

1. Germany’s slow start

The German national football team faced difficulties in their opening game against Curacao and similarly, they struggled against Ivory Coast now. They were down by a goal in the first-half. The DFB Team tried to score a goal in the first half, but their efforts were not enough because of their slow transition. This can affect them throughout the tournament.

2. Franck Kessie more than a midfielder

After helping his establishing the control of the game, Franck Kessie scored the opening goal against the German defence. His presence in the final third was quite important. The captain will continue to play an important role for the Ivory Coast national football team.

3. Supersub Deniz Undav

In the last eight games, he has now scored nine goals. Deniz Undav scored a sensational brace for the Germany national football team and helped them secure three crucial points. Undav once again showed why he deserves to be included in the starting XI under Julian Nagelsmann. Coming off the bench to score two goals is not an easy task and Undav did it in a fashion to lead his side to a win.

4. Ivory Coast’s defensive blunders

The Ivory Coast national football team had a one-goal advantage in the first half. Their performance in the other 45 minutes was not very good. They decided to take a much more defensive approach and there were issues in their backline in the second half. The Elephants must be looking to come up with a better performance in their remaining game.

5. Germany’s second-half comeback

The DFB Team looked weak in the first half against both Ivory Coast and Curacao. Their approach to the game switched in the second half. Their attacking intensity increased and it helped them score two goals in the second half. Julian Nagelsmann’s men looked composed in the midfield during the other 45 minutes and that surely helped them.
