La Tricolor finished third in Group E with four points.

Ecuador secured a shock 2-1 win over Germany in their final Group E clash in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on June 25. Despite going down early in the contest, goals from Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata secured a comeback victory for the South American side.

Leroy Sane scored in the second minute to put Die Mannschaft ahead. However, Germany’s defensive problems were exposed when Angulo equalised just seven minutes later with a brilliant 22-yard finish.

La Tricolor continued to press for the winner, pushing their opponents on the back foot. The breakthrough moment came in the 77th minute. A corner by Moises Caicedo was met by Gonzalo Plata, with the Flamengo forward heading it past Manuel Neuer and into the back of the net.

When referee Tori Penso finally blew the full-time whistle, there were scenes of utter pandemonium among the Ecuadorian players and staff. Manager Sebastian Beccacece climbed the guardrail to celebrate the win with his family, while La Tri players also expressed their joy.

Coming into the clash, this was a must-win game for the South American side if they wanted to remain in the hunt for a knockout spot. Despite facing a German side that won their last two games, they came up with one of the biggest wins in the country’s history.

Almost. Despite their fantastic victory over Germany, Ivory Coast’s 2-0 win against Curacao meant that the Elephants retained their second-placed position in the group, and Ecuador had to settle for a third-placed finish.

As a result, Germany and Ivory Coast clinched the two automatic qualification spots. Ecuador will now have to wait and see if they are among the eight best third-placed teams to go through to the next stage.

Even though their qualification is not mathematically certain, they have a total of four points and a goal difference of zero. As a result, should they somehow fail to qualify even with this record, it will be a massive shock.
