The 2014 World Champions lost their final group match to Ecuador.
In the final group stage game of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Germany suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to Ecuador at the New York New Jersey Stadium, in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Thursday, June 25.
Julian Nagelsmann’s men got an early lead over La Tri after Leroy Sané’s controversial goal broke the deadlock. However, Nilson Angulo scored the equaliser for the South American giants, keeping Ecuador’s World Cup hopes alive.
However, instead of settling for a simple draw, Ecuador wanted a victory to qualify for the last 32. Sebastián Beccacece’s got the much-anticipated goal for La Tri as Gonzalo Plata scored a 78th-minute winner.
Pedro Vite, who has 89 touches on the ball, was Ecuador’s top star, while Chelsea midfielder Moisés Caicedo also gave a stellar performance. In the other Group E match, the Ivory Coast defeated World Cup debutants Curaçao 2-0 in their last round-robin game.

Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany have qualified for the knockout round of the FIFA World Cup 2026. They topped Group E and secured a spot in the last 32 last week. In their opening game, they defeated Curacao 7-1 before they recorded their second win of the tournament against the Ivory Coast 2-1.
The four-time champions have reached the knockout stage of the global tournament for the first time since 2014, the same season when they defeated Argentina in a summit clash to win the glorious title.
They will face one of the best third-place teams in their opening knockout game. As things currently stand, they are likely to lock horns against Paraguay.
