Can Xavi hand Barcelona the much-awaited UCL before leaving?

The Culers are just 4 matches away from witnessing their side win the Champions League. Fans around the globe are rooting that the club legend, Xavi could end Barcelona‘s wait to get their hands on another UCL trophy. They are on course to the final four after the 3-2 victory over PSG in the 1st leg of the quarter-finals. The second leg is set to unfold in Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Tuesday at 8:00 PM GMT.

Now, as Barca prepare to host the team from the French capital, here is how they could lineup to hold off any pressure from the visitors.

Barcelona Predicted lineup (Formation: 4-3-3)

Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Goalkeeper)

In 28 games that he has been in between the sticks, Marc-Andre ter Stegen has 14 clean sheets and has conceded just 22 goals. The German custodian’s presence is essential as he gives his defenders security and a sense of safety, allowing them to move up the field if needed.

Jules Kounde (Right Back)

Jules Kounde deserves all the flowers that he is receiving. He has been Xavi’s go-to player in 2024, having played every possible minute in every competition, a unique feat across the five major European leagues. Kounde has also contributed to 6 team goals from the right-back position – scoring 2 goals while assisting another 4.

Ronald Araujo (Centre Back)

Ronald Araujo is a key member of the first-team squad. He has made 32 appearances for Barcelona across competitions this season. He has solidified his position in the heart of Barca’s defence and due to his consistent performances, the Uruguayan defender is wanted by many European giants.

Pau Cubarsi (Centre Back)

Pau Cubarsi had yet another fantastic night in the Champions League during the 1st leg against Paris Saint-Germain. Playing the game on the back of his man-of-the-match performance against Napoli, Cubarsi showed his class.

Despite his young age of 17, Cubarsi showcased exceptional talent and composure, contributing significantly to his team’s success, notably containing Kylian Mbappe‘s threat. With impressive defensive skills and precise passing, he left a lasting impression on the audience and emerged as a rising star in the sport.

Joao Cancelo (Left Back)

Since coming on loan from Manchester City, Joao Cancelo has earned Xavi’s trust. The Blaugranas missed creativity in the left-back position but the Portuguese tank has taken the problems off Spaniard’s shoulders. Cancelo has 8 goal contributions so far for Barca and the fans will be hoping that he could come up with a defensive masterclass in the second leg while also continuing to impress going forward.

Ilkay Gundogan (Central Midfielder)

Here is another player who has come to Barcelona from the blue side of Manchester, and has become a fan favourite. Yes! Ilkay Gundogan is quick to get the fandom on his back. Football fans know that the Spanish fans are the hardest to gain the trust of, but Gundogan has assured the Culers that he is true to the dream!

Gundogan is the leading chance creator in the Champions League this season. His 4 assists in the competition and 11 across all competitions show how vital he has been.

Frenkie de Jong (Central Midfielder)

Xavi has praised Frenkie de Jong and sees him as a key difference-maker in midfield. While the Dutchman has been linked with a move away from Barcelona for two seasons in a row now, he says he is happy. Happy or not, these talks have not let De Jong underperform. His chemistry in the middle of the pitch with Gundogan and Pedri, in the absence of Gavi, will be key.

Pedri (Central Midfielder)

Pedri’s trajectory from the Spanish second tier with Las Palmas to a key player at Barcelona has been meteoric, drawing comparisons to the legendary Andres Iniesta. His exceptional talent was evident in standout performances like his display against Juventus in the Champions League.

With remarkable skill on and off the ball, Pedri’s presence on the pitch is characterized by his ability to find space effortlessly and provide relentless support to teammates, despite setbacks from injuries.

Lamine Yamal (Right Winger)

While not known for his speed, Lamine Yamal possesses remarkable acceleration, deftly manoeuvring past defenders with his ability to change pace swiftly. His deceptive moves often bait defenders into overcommitting, allowing him to evade tackles effortlessly. Under Xavi’s guidance, he has seamlessly integrated into the team, rewarding the manager’s trust with 13 goals/assists this season.

Robert Lewandowski (Striker)

Robert Lewandowski has scored 20 goals in all competitions for his team this season while also assisting nine more. This is the match where he will be looking to play a crucial role after drawing blanks in the first leg. You’ll want to keep an eye out for him in this game because of his experience.

Raphinha (Left Winger)

The Brazilian winger, Raphinha has been slow to start his life at Barcelona. But this season he has shown his fans what he can do! 18 G/A across all competitions, while also netting a crucial brace against PSG in the 1st leg Raphinha has solidified his position in the attacking set-up. Once again, the offence will be reliant on the attacking prowess of him and Lewa.
