How could Lionel Messi join a European team by the end of 2025?

Messi’s current deal with the Herons will expire at the end of this year.

Lionel Messi may be able to play in Europe (again) before the conclusion of this year because of Inter Miami’s extension of his contract.

Lionel Messi’s current deal with Inter Miami expires in 2025, and the team is prepared to offer him a new one, according to SB Nation. The Argentine star will have the opportunity to play in Europe following the conclusion of the MLS 2025 season under the terms of the new contract.

February marks the beginning of an MLS season, which concludes in December. In order to stay healthy for Argentina’s World Cup title defence in North America in the summer of 2026, Messi will be able to sign a new contract that will allow him to go on loan to a European team after December. However, the 37-year-old has not yet signed a new contract and has not yet chosen which European team to join if such a clause is present.

Numerous well-known individuals have previously seized this chance. David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic signed temporary contracts with AC Milan while playing for LA Galaxy, while Thierry Henry joined Arsenal on loan while playing for the New York Red Bulls.

Messi is currently 37 and it will be interesting to see if the forward will have any intention to lead his national team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Another scenario would be which European club would be keen to bank on the Argentine star’s qualities to make a difference for them given he is not in his prime anymore.

The Herons confirmed a five-match schedule ahead of the 2025 MLS season when they revealed their preseason plans on Friday. This time, Inter Miami will remain in the Western Hemisphere as they visit North, South, and Central America after performing in Asia as part of a world-trotting 2024 tour last time.
