Guardiola has only one year left on his current City contract
The day will come when Pep Guardiola leaves Manchester City, will it be the end of City’s dominance in Europe under the Spanish manager? The former Barcelona manager has done wonders since taking the helm at City, winning three Premier League titles in a row and a treble last season.
Their dominance seems inevitable and it will take a mammoth task for any club to overcome a club like City’s stature. But when will the City’s hegemony end? In his latest interview ahead of maybe the title-deciding clash with Liverpool on Sunday, Guardiola was asked by TNT Sports: will football people understand the magnitude of City’s success when he leaves?
Pep Guardiola: gave four-word reply; “I don’t want to leave!”.
In May 2019, following City’s narrow victory over Liverpool in the Premier League, Guardiola made remarks implying that his team’s accomplishments were taken for granted and that they were essentially captives of their own greatness.
Three years later, City and Liverpool were involved in another intense title battle that City would win by a single point.
He became enraged when the authenticity of City’s championship victories was questioned following the club’s accusations of 115 financial rule violations by the Premier League between 2009 and 2018.
