Inter Miami preparing to extend Lionel Messi's contract for another year

Messi’s teammate Luis Suarez recently renewed his deal.

According to TyC Sports (via MD), Inter Miami are already preparing to extend Lionel Messi’s contract through the end of the 2026 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.

As of now, 2025 could mark Lionel Messi’s last season with the Herons if he fails to extend his deal. However, he still has a lot of opportunities to play in 2026 because he is currently expected to play for Argentina during their World Cup defence.

Messi has not yet made a firm commitment to stay with Argentina until the 2026 World Cup, which will take place across North America. He is anticipated to do so, though, particularly if he chooses to extend his contract with Inter Miami, which ends at the end of the following year.

Currently, Messi would like to sign the contract if it were offered to him. Since departing Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023, he has been playing for the Herons, where he feels quite at home.

Following Miami’s unexpected elimination from the MLS playoffs, the Uruguayan’s future was in doubt. After finishing well ahead in the Eastern Conference, the Herons had easily won the Supporters’ Shield during the regular season.

However, in the first stage of the Eastern Conference finals, Lionel Messi and Co.’s aspirations of capturing the MLS Cup were dashed. Atlanta United defeated Inter Miami in a stunning upset in the best-of-three series.

Suarez had been one of the most productive goalscorers for Inter during their run to the Supporters Shield but he couldn’t help the Herons to the MLS Cup.

He will hope to lead them next season when the next term starts as Inter Miami will aim to win the MLS Cup 2025.
