Joao Cancelo: Man City were a bit ungrateful to me

Joao Cancelo could leave City in the summer if Barcelona meets his asking price
Joao Cancelo went on an intense tirade that seemed to rule out any chance of his playing for his parent team, Manchester City.
The 29-year-old Cancelo was a member of the City club that won the Premier League in 2021 and 2022, but he was sent on loan to Bayern Munich in the middle of the team’s record-breaking season. This term, there has been another loan; the Portugal international has spent the entire season with Barcelona.
The right-back’s deal at Etihad Stadium is set to expire in 2027, but it appears that any chance of reconciliation has been dashed by his remarks against his parent club and manager Pep Guardiola. He calls City “ungrateful” and claims “lies were told” about rumours that Guardiola let him go because of his reaction to being dropped.
This season at Camp Nou, the former Valencia star has shown promise. He scored in Barcelona’s Champions League round of 16 victory over Napoli. Barca is reportedly eager to make the change permanent, although a price has not yet been agreed upon.

“Lies were told!” Cancelo told A Bola (via Goal). “I’ve never been a bad team-mate for them and you can ask either (Nathan) Ake or Rico (Lewis). I don’t have any superiority or inferiority complex towards them, but that’s the manager’s opinion.
“I stayed because it’s not true. I think Man City were a bit ungrateful to me when they said that, because I was a very important player in the years I was there. I never failed in my commitment to the club, to the fans and I always gave everything. I remember a time when I was robbed and attacked and the next day I was playing at the Emirates against Arsenal.
“These are things you don’t forget, I left my wife and daughter alone at home, terrified. People will only remember this because Mister Guardiola has much more power than me when he says something and I prefer to keep to myself.
”I prefer to know that I am telling the truth, I feel fulfilled with what I did. I am a transparent person, I never lie. Life goes on and I wish everything goes well, because while I was there I enjoyed my football and the team. They remain the favourite team to win the Champions League.”
Cancelo played for City during the preseason, but he didn’t play in any competitive games for his parent team this year after finishing a loan at Barcelona. The Portugal defender was reportedly being pursued by Barca in October at a discounted price of £24.3 million, but as of this writing, no deal has been finalised.
