Messi’s current contract with the MLS club ends in 2025.

It appears like Lionel Messi will continue at Inter Miami for a while. Jorge Mas has revealed he will hold talks with the Argentine forward to continue at the club until 2026.

The 37-year-old eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s illustrious career could be coming to an end since he is currently under contract only till the end of the 2025 MLS season.

It has always been assumed that Messi will spend his last years in Argentina, but if he is content in the United States, that may not be the case.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player, who signed in July 2023 was a major contributor to Inter Miami’s success this season.

He inspired the team to capture the Supporters’ Shield with an unprecedented 74 points in the Eastern Conference, scoring 20 goals and dishing out 16 assists in 15 regular season appearances.

However, they have yet to achieve their ultimate objective of winning the MLS Cup. Last month, Inter Miami lost two games to Atlanta United and were eliminated in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs.

Even if the season ended in a poor manner, Messi is likely to sign a new contract with the team. Co-owner Jorge Mas gave a positive assessment of the player’s future before the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which will feature Inter Miami.

“As I said before, I’m very confident that he’ll be opening our new stadium in ’26,” Mas said. “I’ll be sitting with Leo, you know, now at some point in the offseason. And I’m optimistic that as long as Leo’s health holds up, that we’ll be seeing him in pink.”

Messi is currently 37 and if he decides to continue until 2026 he will be 39 by then. It will be interesting to see if the forward will still be at optimal fitness to play at that level.

If he does continue playing until then he might also participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which could be his sixth World Cup.
