Jurgen Klopp slams FIFA Club World Cup 2025 as 'a pointless competition'

The renowned German coach feels it will be pointless to win the competition.

Jürgen Klopp, the former manager of Liverpool, has criticised the expanded FIFA Club World Cup 2025 design, declaring it the worst football concept ever.

The new Club World Cup (2025) features 32 teams competing in the tournament, up from seven. Future iterations will take place every four years.

Jürgen Klopp stated that the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 would further tax the players’ already full schedule in an interview with the German publication Die Welt, which was published late Friday.

Every four years, in the summers between major global competitions, a 32-team event is staged as part of the enlarged format.

Klopp also highlighted that winning the competition isn’t worth it, despite the amount of money the victorious teams get. He said:

“It’s a pointless competition. Whoever wins it will be the worst winner of all time because they’ll have played all summer and then gone straight back into the league.”

“There are people who have never been involved in the day-to-day business of football and are now coming up with ideas.”

Jurgen Klopp warned that adding another event could be harmful to the players’ health, pointing out that they are having less and less time to recuperate these days. The German former coach said:

“It’s too many games. I fear that next season we will see injuries like never before. If not then, they’ll come during or after the Club World Cup. There’s no real recovery for those involved, neither physically nor mentally.”

Jürgen Klopp on returning to coaching again

Klopp, who left Liverpool in 2024 after a nine-year, wildly successful tenure, is currently Red Bull’s president of global soccer. Red Bull owns Bundesliga’s RB Leipzig and the MLS’s New York Red Bulls, among other clubs.

Additionally, Klopp was asked if he wanted to coach once more. He answered:

“I don’t want that anymore. I have a job now that fulfils me and is also intense. I don’t sleep in the morning and I don’t go to bed later at night, but I can organise my work much better.”
