LAFC in talks to sign Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann: Report

LAFC are second in the Western Conference table.

Los Angeles FC (LAFC), a Major League Soccer team, are in negotiations to sign Antoine Griezmann, a striker for Atletico Madrid. Griezmann will be paired alongside Olivier Giroud and Hugo Lloris, two former teammates from France.

With one year left on his Atletico Madrid contract and a release clause at €10 million ($10.9 million), the France forward should be within the financial reach of the Los Angeles Football Club. In the meantime, the Spanish team have been advancing swiftly in the signing of new players.

Atletico are on the verge of announcing two big signings. They have reportedly brought the likes of Conor Gallagher and Julian Alvarez, from Chelsea and Manchester City respectively.

During the course of his nearly 15-year professional career, Griezmann has scored 268 goals and supplied 119 assists. LAFC are only two points behind the Western Conference leaders in Major League Soccer.

Griezmann has always expressed interest in joining the MLS. The Frenchman acknowledged his desire to play in America last year: “Saudi Arabia? I understand those who have to go there; we’re talking about incredible sums of money,”

Griezmann also said. “Could I go? I have a family, three children. It’s not an easy decision to make. The MLS is still my priority.”

Griezmann will be among the French players to join LAFC. In December 2023, they signed former France national team goalie Hugo Lloris. For the Los Angeles team, Lloris has started 24 games and recorded 64 saves with a 68.1 save %.

Having joined LAFC in early May, Olivier Giroud has not yet made his team debut. Griezmann seems to be the MLS team’s top priority as they are still connected with a move for him.

The striker has been playing in LaLiga, and has represented Atletico and Barcelona. However, he is yet to win the league title with Atletico. A move away from the Spanish club can’t ruled out. If LAFC meet the French player’s release clause then Griezmann might become another big star to join the American team.

LAFC have been one of the top sides. Griezmann’s addition will further make them into a dominant team in the league.
