Lionel Messi becomes first player to record 35 goal contributions in back-to-back MLS seasons

Lionel Messi created MLS history with two goals and one assist in Inter Miami’s 4-0 victory over New York City. Messi now has 24 goals and 13 assists in 23 league games and is currently leading the table and in the league.
The 38-year-old’s two goals and assist make him the first player in Major League Soccer history to record 35 goal contributions in back-to-back seasons. In 25 games during the previous season, the Argentine scored 23 goals and provided 13 assists.
Despite being in the later stages of his career, the former Barcelona player has continued to dominate the goalscoring charts with his experience and ability to influence matches.
Inter Miami in hunt for second consecutive MLS Supporters’ Shield
After the win, Inter Miami secured a position in the MLS Cup Playoffs and climbed into third place with 55 points, below Philadelphia (60 points) and FC Cincinnati in the MLS Eastern Conference rankings.
With five games left in the regular season, Inter Miami have a chance to win the MLS Supporters’ Shield for the second consecutive year. They trail Philadelphia by five points in the league standings.
With 24 goals, Lionel Messi broke a tie with LAFC player Denis Bouanga to reclaim the top spot in the MLS Golden Boot race. Moreover, he also set a new record, becoming the first player in MLS history to record at least 35 goal contributions in successive seasons.
Lionel Messi will be eager to lead his side to another Supporters’ Shield this season as they aim to finish top of the table.
