Argentina will face Venezuela and Ecuador in the September international break matches.
Lionel Messi’s availability for Argentina’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier game against Ecuador is doubtful. The forward could miss the match due to unforeseen reasons.
Messi has joined the national team for training ahead of the game and will play their first match against Venezuela on Thursday. However, his participation in the next qualifier match is uncertain.
According to Fernando Czyz, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni held a discussion with Messi, and the former Barcelona player confirmed that he is fit. However, Scaloni will make the final decision on his availability against Ecuador.
Furthermore, the speculation of why Messi might miss their second game is related to Inter Miami. The MLS club want the forward to avoid any serious injury, given that they are now entering into a crucial phase of the season.
The Herons want to qualify for the playoffs and therefore don’t want Messi to sustain any injury. Hence, they are taking every precaution for their star player to avoid injuries.
Messi already has endured an injury-ridden season
The 38-year-old hasn’t had an injury-free season. He has suffered several injuries throughout the campaign and spent a large period of time on the sidelines during Inter Miami and Argentina’s matches.
Considering the South American giants have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, Inter Miami will hope that Messi will be released from the squad before the second September international break game, as they need the player for the pivotal part of the MLS campaign.

Meanwhile, Javier Mascherano’s side are currently sixth in the MLS Eastern Conference table, 11 points adrift of the first-place team, Philadelphia Union. They will have to grind out wins if they are to secure their place in the playoffs.
Messi has continued his terrific form despite missing many matches. The forward has 19 goals in 19 MLS matches so far this season and is second in the MLS 2025 top scorer list.
Why Messi could miss the game against Ecuador?
For precautionary reasons, as Inter Miami don’t want to overload him with many games.
