Messi had left Barcelona in 2021.
In an interview with DSports on Tuesday, football journalist Alex Candal, who had initially revealed that Lionel Messi moved to Inter Miami, said that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is excited to play in Barcelona’s recently refurbished Camp Nou.
“I can’t leave football without playing at the new Camp Nou,” were the words associated with Messi by him.
At the end of the year, Messi’s contract with Inter Miami will come to an end. Thus Barcelona supporters are thrilled about the possibility of Messi wearing the Blaugrana colours. But obstacles prevent a reunion.
The team’s financial difficulties continue to be a major worry. It’s unclear if they can work out a solution to accommodate their all-time best scorer.
After the club were unable to agree to a new contract due to financial constraints, Messi had to bid adieu to Barcelona in 2021.
Messi’s tense relationship with Barcelona president Joan Laporta, which deteriorated after his departure, may have been another significant contributing reason.
Could there be a final dance at Camp Nou?
Since Messi’s departure, Barcelona’s famous stadium, where he played for 17 years, has seen extensive renovations. At the conclusion of the 2022–2023 season, the team relocated from Camp Nou to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys while renovations totalling $984 million got underway.
Although the renovation is anticipated to be finished by June 2026, Barcelona intend to return to their emotional home later this year for the 2025–2026 season.
It might be challenging to arrange a final game because of Messi’s commitment to Inter Miami and their involvement in the Club World Cup this summer.
However, if Messi doesn’t extend his deal with the Herons after the end of his contract he could consider joining the club next January during the winter window and sign a short-term deal with the Catalan club.
Barcelona have not addressed the rumours regarding Messi’s potential final dance at Camp Nou. Messi scored 396 goals in his 382 games at Camp Nou.
