The Argentine superstar has commented that he won’t become a manager.
Lionel Messi has shared his retirement plans. Despite nearing the conclusion of his career, the 38-year-old Argentina international is still regarded as one of the world’s greatest players. The veteran seems to have different plans, even though many would love the Inter Miami ace to become a manager.
In addition to his skill and aptitude on the field, he has won the World Cup, numerous international trophies, and numerous Ballon d’Or awards.
Even the former FC Barcelona player, who will turn 39 later this year, is aware that his time in the sport is running out. He even acknowledged in September of last year that he was still undecided about playing for Argentina in the 2026 World Cup.
Inspired by Miami co-owner Beckham, he told Luzu TV this week that although he is not against becoming a manager in the future, he would like to oversee a young team as an owner.
When Lionel Messi inked a contract renewal with Major League Soccer team Inter Miami until 2028 late last year, it was evident that he had no intention of retiring just yet.
Lionel Messi comments on his retirement plans

The legendary Argentine stated in October of last year that he was “really excited” about staying longer with the Herons and relocating to Miami Freedom Park, their much-anticipated new stadium, later in 2026.
He said on Tuesday to the Argentinian streaming channel, “I don’t see myself as a coach. I like the idea of being a manager, but I’d prefer to be an owner.
“I’d like to have my own club, start from the bottom, and make it grow. To be able to give the kids the opportunity to develop and achieve something important. If I had to choose, that’s what would appeal to me most.”
In addition to trying to build on Miami’s MLS Cup victory in 2026, Lionel Messi will be working to be in peak condition to help Argentina defend their World Cup championship this year before eventually calling it quits on his glittering career. He is currently enjoying his off-season, and in the upcoming weeks, he will return for pre-season training.
