The Argentine helped Barcelona secure the Champions League against Manchester United with that goal.

In a career full of beauty, brilliance, and breathtaking moments, Lionel Messi has scored over 850 goals. However, the Barcelona icon has recently revealed which one shines out above the rest. It may surprise some fans.

The Inter Miami attacker recently acknowledged in an interview that his favourite goal of all time is a header rather than one of his trademark solo runs or curling finishes. Indeed, it was a header that completed a momentous evening for Barça.

“I had many goals that are perhaps even more beautiful and of a lot of value, because of the importance as well, but the header in the Champions League final against Manchester United was always my favourite,” Messi explained as quoted by SPORT.

That goal was scored at the UEFA Champions League final in Rome on May 27, 2009. For a player who is more adept at squeezing by opponents than jumping over them, it was an uncommon sight.

However, Messi jumped into the air after grabbing a beautiful cross from Xavi Hernández in the 70th minute. He outjumped defenders and blasted a looping header over the tall Edwin van der Sar, despite only being 1.70m tall.

What a fitting moment for Messi to score his only headed goal in a Champions League final. The goal completed a historic season for Barcelona under Pep Guardiola and sealed their 2-0 win over Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.

Barça became the first Spanish team to ever win the treble, LaLiga, Copa del Rey, and the Champions League during the 2008–09 season.

Despite all of Messi’s spectacular dribbles, booming free kicks, and impossible angle goals, his favourite goal still serves as a reminder of the accuracy, cohesion, and genius that Barcelona were known for at their best.

In the centre of it all was a small Argentine who stood tall, fearless, and even bootless.
