The Mexico national football team locked horns with the South Africa national football team in the opening fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It was an exciting contest to watch and it ended in favour of El Tri.

The Javier Aguirre-led side came out on top with a 2-0 win. Julian Quinones became the first goal scorer of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after scoring the goal in the ninth minute against Bafana Bafana. After opening the scoring, El Tri only shifted the momentum in their favour. Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead after scoring a goal in the second half by tapping in the ball with his head.

Hugo Broos’ men put in an underwhelming performance. Despite starting as a back five, the South Africa national football team found themselves under pressure against Mexico’s high press. Bafana Bafana will now have to come up with a better strategy for their remaining group stage games if they want to get to the knockout stage of the mega competition.

FIFA World Cup 2026 also saw its first red cards during the Mexico vs South Africa clash. It was Yaya Sithole who was shown a straight red after his ruthless tackle in the 50th minute. The Hugo Broos-led side were put under more pressure after conceding their second red card in the 84th minute. Themba Zwane’s poor challenge was taken seriously by the on-field referee and South Africa were reduced to 9-men.

Later in the final moments of the game, the Mexican captain Cesar Montes was shown a straight red after he stepped in to stop Bafana Bafana’s counter-attack. Broos and Aguirre will now have to make some significant changes for the upcoming games.
