Who is Luis Romo? Mexico hero sends El Tri to FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32

El Tri secured their second group stage win.

Luis Romo opened the scoring for Mexico against South Korea with an unusual goal in front of his hometown fans in Jalisco.

The Chivas de Guadalajara midfielder was a surprise starter. He made good use of his opportunity, scoring for El Tri in the 50th minute with a smart play that beat Korea custodian Kim Seung-Gyu. Kim appeared to have claimed a ball thrown into the air by a Korean defender in the area, while Mexico striker Raul Jimenez lurked.

Nonetheless, he clashed with Lee Gi-Hyuk as he attempted to bring the ball down, spilling it in the box. Luis Romo, who was standing near the penalty spot, sensed an opening and swung his foot around to score into an empty net.

His home supporters erupted in celebration when their local man scored. His goal, after the full-time score remains 1-0, sends El Tri to the round of 32 as Group A winners.
