Top six managers with most points won in first 10 Premier League matches
Ange Postecoglou’s arrival has been a boon for the Spurs’ fans.
Coming into the Premier League is a challenge for any manager no matter the length of their resumes. It is one of the most competitive leagues in the world that has gotten the better of tactical geniuses time and time again. There is no margin of error and the manager is always under intense scrutiny.
However, some managers in the past have taken the challenge head-on. For instance, Ange Postecoglou’s initial assessment as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur has been positive. The tactician has transformed the club’s fortunes and given the London-based club a huge boost post Harry Kane’s departure ahead of the 2023-24 season of the Premier League.
Just like him, a few exceptional managers, in the past, started their tenures all guns blazing. With that thought in mind, here is a look at the top six managers with the most points won from their first 10 Premier League games in charge:
6. Maurizio Sarri (Chelsea) – 24 points
Maurizio Sarri began his life at Chelsea extremely well. The Italian tactician secured 24 points in his first 10 Premier League games in charge of the Blues. He took the post of manager from 14 July 2018 to 30 June 2019 and oversaw 63 games, winning 40 of them in all competitions. He also led the Blues to winning the UEFA Europa League during the 2018-19 season.
5. John Gregory (Aston Villa) – 24 points
John Gregory was Aston Villa’s manager from 25 February 1998 to 23 January 2002. In that period, he took charge of the side for 186 overall matches. In the Premier League, the Englishman secured 24 points in his first 10 matches, winning the hearts of the fans.
His time at Aston Villa was his longest for a single club in a long managing career. He was last seen managing Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League in 2019.
4. Frank Clarke (Nottingham Forest) – 24 points
Frank Clarke was both a player and later a manager at Nottingham Forest. He was the manager of the club from 1993 to 1996 in his first spell. The tactician also secured 24 points from his first 10 Premier League games, earning a positive reputation in English football.
He went on to manage Manchester City from 1996 to 1998 before returning to Nottingham Forest for a second spell spanning from 2011 to 2013. The 80-year-old has retired since.
3. Carlo Ancelotti (Chelsea) – 24 points
Carlo Ancelotti took the Premier League by storm after winning 24 points in his first 10 league fixtures as Chelsea’s boss. The current Real Madrid manager took charge of Chelsea from 2009 to 2011. In his tenure, CFC won 68 matches from 109 in all competitions. He also won the Premier League in the 2009-10 season after starting the campaign all guns blazing.
2. Guus Hiddink (Chelsea) – 25 points
Guus Hidding was the record holder until last year for scoring the most points from the first 10 Premier League games for a manager. He secured 25 points for Chelsea after taking over as manager in February 2009. The Dutch manager oversaw 22 matches for the Blues and won 16 of them while losing only one, successfully steadying the ship after Luiz Felipe Scolari’s departure.
1. Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham Hotspur) – 26 points
Ange Postecoglou exceeded expectations at the start of his managerial stint with Tottenham Hotspur. There were clouds of uncertainty hanging over Spurs after Harry Kane’s departure to FC Bayern Munich. However, taking the challenge in his stride, the Australian tactician recorded a magnificent 26-point haul in his first 10 Premier League games (2023-24 season) in charge.
It is a new record and one that will take a massive effort to beat. Furthermore, he won eight and drew two of the first 10 games with no defeats.
