Manchester United announce 25-man squad for UEFA Europa League 2024-25
Several key players don’t have their names on the squad list.
Manchester United have confirmed their squad for the upcoming UEFA Europa League games. Despite finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, the club secured a place in the Europa League. This was only possible after their win against Manchester City in the final of the FA Cup in May. It provided them a space in the Europa League this season.
They will be competing in a revamped Europa League which now has a new format. United will face eight clubs in order to reach the round of 16. They will play Rangers, PAOK, Bodo/Glimt and FC Twente at home. Porto, Fenerbahce, Viktoria Plzen and FCSB on their four away fixtures.
In order to claim the direct place in the round of 16, the club will have to at least finish in the top eight. Other than that they can place inside the top 24. It will see them compete in a playoff to secure one of the last 16 spots. If the Red Devils finish below 24 in the league phase, we will see them eliminated from the competition.
The club have announced a strong roster going into the tournament. New signings Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte have been included.
However, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have not been included. This is due to the UEFA rule which states that club-trained players born after 1 January 2003 can’t be counted as part of the main group. Besides that, they can have all the first-team players.
United will hope to start the Europa League on a strong note. They have commenced the new Premier League season with a win and two defeats. Pressure has already started piling up on Erik ten Hag. His side were easily defeated by Liverpool 3-0. The Reds were led by their new head coach Arne Slot.
Ten Hag had received backing from the club’s new board following their FA Cup victory over City the previous season. However, he may come under additional scrutiny if the team performs similarly in spite of fresh additions this season.
