The Red Devils will play their third Europa League final this season.
When Manchester United started competing in the European Cup in 1956, they became the first English team to compete in a European tournament. With the exception of the Conference League and Intertoto Cup, the club have now participated in every competition run by UEFA.
The European Cup (now known as the UEFA Champions League) is the tournament in which Manchester United experienced the greatest success. They have won three European Cups, the first of which was in 1968, making them the first English team to do so. The two previous triumphs occurred in 1999 and 2008.
We examine Manchester United’s record in Europa League finals after the team won the competition in 2017 and advanced to two more finals.
3. Ajax 0-2 Manchester United: Europa League (2016–17)
Following a thrilling 2-0 victory against Ajax in the 2016-17 season in Stockholm, Manchester United raised the Europa League trophy for the first time in their history.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s close-range goal and Paul Pogba’s deflected goal in the 18th minute gave United their second title of the season. The outcome brought another success to the club under Jose Mourinho.
They became the fifth club in history to win all three of the major European titles as a result of their achievement.
2. Villarreal 11-10 (pens) Manchester United: Europa League (2020–21)
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels that this was a hugely wasted chance to win his first trophy as the Manchester United manager. Gerard Moreno gave the Spanish team the lead in the first half by heading home Daniel Parejo’s free kick in front of 9,500 spectators before Edinson Cavani cancelled his goal.
After a 1-1 draw in Gdansk, Poland, David de Gea’s missed opportunity sent Manchester United to a thrilling 11-10 penalty shootout loss over Villarreal in the Europa League final in 2020–21.
1. Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United: Europa League 2024-25 [set to be played]
Following their semi-final matches, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United will play each other in the Europa League final in Bilbao on May 21.
Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro’s goals in the second half helped Spurs defeat Bodo/Glimt 2-0 in Norway, securing a 5-1 aggregate victory. Both teams maintained their lead from the opening legs.
After defeating Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the first leg in the Basque Country, United finished the job at Old Trafford with a 4-1 victory on the evening and a 7-1 aggregate victory thanks to goals from Mason Mount, Casemiro, and Rasmus Hojlund.
This will just be the sixth occasion that two English teams have faced off in a major European final.
