Manchester United and Liverpool are two of the biggest clubs in world football and the biggest in English football. Both teams have numerous titles and accolades and have developed a fierce rivalry over the years. Manchester United have had its own era of domination in the Premier League under Sir Alex Ferguson whereas Liverpool has also had its dominant era as well.
Over the years this rivalry has blossomed into one of the best matches to look forward to in football. Let’s take a look at the top 10 Manchester United vs Liverpool matches.
10. Manchester United 1- 4 Liverpool
One of the most humiliating defeats for Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Sir Alex Ferguson era. Sir Alex Ferguson dominated the Premier League for many seasons with Manchester United and rarely suffered humiliating defeats, especially at their home stadium.
During a league match in the 2009-2010 season, Man United faced second-placed Liverpool at Old Trafford. United were ten points above Liverpool and scored an early goal from the penalty spot. However, the Reds did not give up and scored four goals to overturn the match. Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard scored as well doing an iconic celebration as well. The Red Devils suffered a humiliating 4-1 loss at Old Trafford but eventually won the Premier League at the end of the season.
9. Manchester United 1-0 Liverpool
The score seems very normal for a big match but the stakes were very high in this match. Man United faced Liverpool in the 1996 FA Cup final and won the tie 1-0. Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man United became the first English club to win the League and FA Cup double consecutively.
The 1996 FA Cup final saw chances from both ends with Liverpool trying their best as well. The majority of the game did not see any big chances or shots at goal however the game was decided in the last few minutes. Eric Cantona played after a 7-month suspension at Old Trafford and scored the only goal in the final which won Manchester United the 1996 FA Cup.
8. Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool
The Red Devils have lost the majority of their former glory and have been struggling for quite some time in the Premier League. To rub more salt in their wounds, they had not won a league fixture against Liverpool since March 2018 until August 2022 when things changed.
Erik Ten Hag took over as manager and faced a lot of criticism. Just before their match against Liverpool, Man United lost 4-0 to Brentford and were not in good form at all. However, United turned on the heat showed intensity and dominated the majority of the game. Marcus Rashford was on the scoresheet alongside Jadon Sancho who scored a great goal as well. Despite Salah scoring a late goal, Manchester United took all the deserved 3 points and showed a statement of intent under Erik Ten Hag.
7. Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool
Dimitar Berbatov is indeed an underrated legend in today’s date. Although back in the day, opposition players knew about the threat he posed. Man United faced Liverpool in a Premier League fixture in the 2010-2011 season.
Steven Gerrard scored twice in six minutes and Berbatov on the other hand was in impeccable form that season. Berbatov scored a hat-trick to overturn the 2-0 lead and win a thrilling match against Liverpool. Eventually, Manchester United won the 2010-2011 Premier League title and Berbatov also won the Golden Boot in the league alongside Carlos Tevez in the same season.

6. Liverpool 3-3 Manchester United
Back in January 1994 when the Barclay’s Premier League came to fruition, Liverpool made an iconic comeback as the match ended 3-3 against United. It was the second season in the new ” Premier League”.
Manchester United went 3-0 up in just 25 minutes but Liverpool did not give up as Neil Clough scored a brace before the first half ended. Liverpool made an improbable comeback as defender Neil Ruddock scored a late header. Despite Liverpool making an iconic comeback at Anfield, Manchester United had the last laugh. The Red Devils won the Premier League title that season with Liverpool 32 points behind them in eighth place.
5. Liverpool 2-3 Manchester United
A nightmare for Jamie Carragher as the Liverpool legend helped the opposition team more than he helped his own. The first half of the match saw United get a two goal lead as Jamie Carragher scored two own goals.
Liverpool got a goal back as the first half ended but it was a nightmare eventually as the match ended 3-2 in favour of Manchester United. The Red Devils enjoyed their victory and three points as they beat Liverpool in their own stadium.
4. Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool
In October 2021, Liverpool humiliated Man United and achieved numerous records as well. Liverpool were 4-0 in the first half itself and ended the match on a strong note winning it 5-0.
The Reds managed to do this at Old Trafford as well. Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick against Manchester United. After this match, he became the African player with the highest goals in the Premier League. Bruno Fernandes missed an early chance in the game and after that, Liverpool were relentless as they eventually won the match 5-0.
3. Liverpool 4-0 Manchester United
After the reverse fixture at Old Trafford, Man United were set to travel to Anfield to face Liverpool. In the same season, Liverpool humiliated Manchester United at Old Trafford beating them 5-0. Jurgen Klopp’s side did the same at Anfield beating Manchester 4-0 this time.
Mohamed Salah was goalless for eight games but eventually scored a brace against Manchester United. Luis Diaz and Sadio Mané scored a goal each as well to put the one-sided affair to bed as Manchester United lost 4-0.
2. Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool ran rampant in the Premier League in the 2022-2023 season. Liverpool showed no signs of trying their best to win the PL that season and displayed their best performance that season against Manchester United.
Liverpool faced Manchester United in a classic Premier League fixture. Cody Gakpo scored the first goal as the first half ended 1-0. Liverpool were Merciless in the second half as they scored 6 more goals and the match ended 7-0. Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick and became Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League. This brutal 7-0 victory became the biggest in the history of the fixture.
1. Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool
The 2023-2024 FA Cup quarter-final tie between Liverpool and Manchester United was an action-packed match.
Scott Mctominay gave Manchester United an early lead by scoring in the 10th minute. Manchester United dominated the majority of the first half however Max Allister and Mohamed Salah scored a goal each in the dying minutes of the first half. After this, the momentum was complete with Liverpool as they led 2-1. Jurgen Klopp’s side squandered a few good chances as well and eventually, Manchester United winger Antony scored in the 87th minute of the game.
Antony’s late heroics drove the match towards extra time where Harvey Elliot scored in the 105th minute to make the score 3-2. Manchester United did not give up and Marcus Rashford scored just 5 minutes after Harvey Elliot’s goal. The match was 3-3 and was all set to go to penalties but Liverpool failed to clear the ball from a corner. Garnacho took advantage of this and carried the ball upfront and Amad Diallo scored the winning goal in the 121st minute.
