Chelsea beat Brighton 2-1 to climb sixth spot
Reece James’ dismissal against Brighton means he won’t be available for the start of the Premier League 2024-25 season.
After being substituted, the Chelsea captain kicked out against Joao Pedro at the Amex Stadium and was subsequently fired.
After a season marred by injuries, James had hoped to show England manager Gareth Southgate that he was fit for the Euros. However, he will miss his team’s last game against Bournemouth.
Since this is the full-back’s second red card of the year, his punishment has been increased to four games, which will extend into the 2024–2025 campaign. In November, the 24-year-old additionally got dismissed against Newcastle.

With their victory over Brighton, Chelsea now just need one more point to guarantee sixth place and European qualifying. However, manager Mauricio Pochettino expressed regret for the “painful” dismissal of his club captain.
“It’s difficult to give my opinion because I didn’t have time to see the action,” Pochettino said. “But it’s painful [for us] because it’s a fantastic night of football and he’s a really important player.
“Now he is going to miss the next game and a few games next season.”
After taking over as Chelsea captain last summer despite struggles with a hamstring injury, James has only made five starts so far this season.
Last Saturday, he made his comeback against Nottingham Forest, helping Nicolas Jackson to score the game-winning goal. The right-back, who last played for his country against Italy in March of last year, seems to be a long shot to be included in Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.
