Australia faced USA in their second FIFA World Cup 2026 match at Lumen Field in Seattle on July 19. Veteran attacker Mathew Leckie wrote his name in football history, becoming his nation’s highest appearance maker in World Cup history.
Friday’s outing was Leckie’s 11th appearance in FIFA’s flagship tournament, putting him one clear of Mathew Ryan’s record of 10 World Cup appearances for the Socceroos.

Interestingly, Leckie also became only the second player, other than the legendary Tim Cahill, to play in four World Cups for the Socceroos. Leckie, who plies his trade for Melbourne City, played for his nation in the 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026 editions. Goalkeeper Ryan can also tie this record if he plays in a match in the ongoing 48-team tournament in North America.

Born in Melbourne, Leckie began his playing career in the youth academies of the Brimbank Stallions and Bulleen Lions. He made his senior debut for the latter in 2008 and signed for A-League side Adelaide United the following year.
German side Borussia Mönchengladbach signed him in 2011. He spent a season on loan at FSV Frankfurt, and the move was made permanent in 2013. His successful performances prompted FC Ingolstadt 04 to sign him on a three-year contract, and he helped the club achieve promotion to the Bundesliga.
Hertha Berlin signed him in 2017, and he made 68 appearances for the German side. Having lost his starting spot after the 2019-20 season, he returned to his home country, signing for Melbourne City. He has made 79 appearances for the A-League club, scoring 18 goals.
Leckie made his international debut in 2012. Since then, he has earned 82 caps, making him the ninth most-capped player for his nation. He has scored 14 goals and registered eight assists.
