The German centre-back is playing his last season as a footballer.

Mats Hummels, a football icon from Germany, has confirmed he will retire after the end of the season. Hummels, 36, made a tearful social media declaration to end his dazzling 18-year career.

Sitting in front of a camera, the centre-back, who currently plays for AS Roma, watched the best moments of his career while playing for teams like Germany, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund.

He confirmed at the end of the season that he will hang up his shoes, which will be the end of an era for one of the most successful centre-backs in German history.

Hummels said, “I’m struggling with my emotions right now. Now comes the moment that no footballer can avoid. After more than 18 years and so many things that football has given me, I’m ending my career this summer.

“When I see all this [the highlights], I know how much this whole journey, this whole path has meant to me.

During his career, Hummels won nearly every trophy imaginable, and he particularly excelled during his two tenures with Dortmund.

The former Germany international advanced to two Champions League finals with the German powerhouses and won two Bundesliga crowns and two domestic cups with BVB.

However, the peak achievement of his football career came in 2014 when Germany beat Argentina 1-0 in the final of the FIFA World Cup.

With Bayern, where he began his career in 2007, Hummels also has three titles and one cup to his name. The Roma player praised his teammates and bosses after reflecting on all of those accomplishments.

Hummels added: “Because it takes a lot, just having the right coaches at the right time, being fit at the right time, having the right team-mates at the right time.

Hummels will go down as one of the greatest German centre-backs of all time and will hopefully enjoy his last season.
