Some key players have missed out on the provisional squad

Manager Jamie Lozano recently announced the provisional squad for Mexico’s 2024 Copa America campaign, which will begin from 23rd June onwards against Jamaica. The El Tri are finally back in the continent’s most prestigious tournament after missing out on the 2019 and 2021 editions.

Some key points from the provisional squad

With the squad expected to be largely kept intact from the Gold Cup triumph less than a year ago, Lozano sprung a couple of surprises, the biggest being leaving out seasoned winger Hirving Lozano. The PSV Eindhoven man’s form has dropped significantly in recent times, losing his starting place at Eindhoven after his summer move from Napoli.

Meanwhile, former national team starts Raul Jimenez and Guillermo Ochoa also have not made the cut for the squad, the latter’s exclusion causing a few raised eyebrows in the Mexican footballing circles. Jimenez’s exclusion is more accepted, with the veteran being in poor form while Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez having been in electric form this season.

With a group consisting of Jamaica, Venezuela and Ecuador, Mexico would be aiming to at least reach the knockouts of the tournament, making amends for missing out on the previous two editions of the tournament.
