Mexico beat South Africa in their first match.

Mexico will return to action in Group A of the FIFA World Cup 2026 when they face South Korea in a match that could have a significant impact on the standings. El Tri opened their campaign with a victory over South Africa. They will aim to build on that result as they look to strengthen their position in the race for qualification.

Having collected three points from their opening fixture, Mexico have placed themselves in a strong position heading into the second round of group-stage matches. A positive result against South Korea would move them closer to securing a place in the knockout rounds.

Head coach Javier Aguirre is expected to maintain the core of the side that delivered in the tournament opener. Mexico have relied on a balanced approach, combining defensive discipline with attacking movement through the wide areas and central channels.

The team is likely to continue with a 4-3-3 formation, allowing them to control possession in midfield while providing support to an experienced attacking line led by Raul Jimenez.

Who all will be expected to be in the starting lineup?

Raúl Rangel is expected to start in goal for Mexico. The goalkeeper is likely to continue as the first-choice option between the posts.

In defence, Israel Reyes is expected to occupy the right-back position. Meanwhile, Johan Vasquez and Edson Alvarez are likely to form the central defensive partnership. Jesus Gallardo is expected to start at left-back, bringing experience and attacking support from the flank.

The midfield trio is likely to consist of Alvaro Fidalgo, Erik Lira and Bernardo Gutierrez. Fidalgo is expected to play a key role in linking defence and attack. Meanwhile, Lira and Gutierrez will provide additional stability and ball progression through the centre of the pitch.

Mexico’s front three are expected to feature Roberto Alvarado on the right wing, Julian Quinones on the left and Raul Jimenez through the middle. Jimenez remains one of the most experienced members of the squad. He is expected to lead the line, with Alvarado and Quinones providing width and attacking support.

Mexico are unlikely to make major alterations to their lineup. They seek continuity and momentum in a fixture that could prove decisive in the battle for qualification from Group A.
