Mexico vs South Korea: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Both sides are just one win away from securing a knockout berth in FIFA World Cup 2026.

Guadalajara Stadium in Mexico gears up to host a highly anticipated Group A fixture of Matchweek 2 in the FIFA World Cup 2026, where hosts Mexico take on Asian powerhouse South Korea in what is set to be a thrilling battle.

A win in the next game could almost guarantee a spot in the knockout rounds for both teams as both teams are coming after wining their first match of FIFA World Cup 2026.

The hosts Mexico, are coming after a brilliant 2-0 win over South Korea in the opening fixture of FIFA World Cup 2026. Cesar Montes picked up a red card in the last game and will be out for the next game. Captain Edson Alvarez will be the primary choice to replace Montes in the next game.

Talking about the Taegeuk Warriors failed to advance past the group stage when they last played World Cup twice in American soil in 1994 USA and 1986 Mexico.

South Korea are known for causing big upsets. Whether it be knocking out defending champions Germany or a dramatic 2-1 golden goal victory over Italy in the 2002 Round of 16, it would not be wise to underestimate the Asian powerhouse.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Spain’s star-studded attacking lineup manage to beat the resolute defensive backline of Cape Verde, or will the Blue Sharks pull one of the biggest upsets against Spain in the opener? We shall find that out soon.

5. Jesus Gallardo vs Lee Kang-In

The Mexican left back is coming after a decent spell with Toluca in Liga MX, and he will be up against Lee Kang In, someone who has extensive experience playing in top European leagues. This player battle looks asymmetrical, but Gallardo is a veteran who has won several games for Mexico.

The most valuable player in the South Korea squad, Lee played a pivotal role in helping Luis Enrique’s PSG win back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles. He is the chief architect of South Korea’s frontline who is responsible for creating chances upfront for captain Heung Min Son.

4. Julián Quiñones vs Seol Young-Woo

The first goalscorer of FIFA World Cup 2026, Quinones is coming after a highly productive spell with Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League. He competes in top Asian leagues and very well rubbed shoulders with some of the best Asian players.

Playing in the Serbian top flight for FK Crvena Zvezda, Young Woo will be tasked with the responsibility of containing Quinones, who is in red-hot form. It will be a herculean task for Seol to match the pace and acceleration of Quinones from the wings.

3. Hwang In-Beom vs Álvaro Fidalgo

Hwang In-Beom is coming after a productive spell with Dutch outfit Feyenoord. Apart from just being a defensive anchor in the middle of the park, Hwang In-Beom can contribute effectively in the offence, making 6 goal contributions in over 20 games in the Eredivisie.

Fidalgo made a high-profile switch from Liga MX to La Liga with Real Betis. Though his maiden season in the Spanish top flight was not an easy one, he now has that European pedigree and knows how to unlock tight defences and create spaces.

2. Kim Min-Jae vs Raúl Jiménez

Kim Min-jae became the first-ever South Korean footballer to win both the Italian Serie A title and the German Bundesliga during his stint in Naples and Munich. He is a proven match winner and he knows to keep his nerves in high pressure games.

Jimenez had a decent spell with London outfit Fulham in the English Premier League. Despite Wolves’ relegation to Championship, he made a move back to Molineux Park recently. This is Raul Jimenez’s fourth FIFA World Cup appearance

1. Johan Vasquez vs Son Heung Min

He is a core pillar of Javier Aguirre’s defensive framework and in the absence of Cesar Montes, he will need to step up for his country. He is a core pillar of Javier Aguirre’s defensive framework and in the absence of Cesar Montes, he will need to step up for his country.

Unarguably one of the greatest South Koreans to ever play the beautiful game of football, Son is a living legend. Son is coming after a productive spell with Los Angeles FC in the Major League Soccer, making 17 goal contributions in just over 20 games.
