El Tri are looking for back-to-back wins in the ongoing World Cup.
Mexico will take on South Korea in their second Group A fixture in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at Estadio Akron in Zapopan on June 18. The co-hosts made a victorious start to the expanded 48-team edition in North America, beating South Africa 2-0 in their opening match.
Goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez in each half sealed a comfortable victory for El Tri and marked their first-ever win on matchday one of a World Cup. The result has put them at the top of their group, and they will face a tough test to maintain that status against the Taegeuk Warriors, who are on a nine-match unbeaten run.
With a match against Czechia set to come later, Javier Aguirre’s men will look for a second consecutive win, which will put them in pole position to secure the top spot in the group stage.

Thoughts on the lineup
Defender Cesar Montes is serving a suspension after being sent off in the match against South Africa, so Aguirre opted for the centre-back pairing of captain Edson Alvarez and Genoa’s Johan Vasquez. Jesus Gallardo and Jorge Sanchez start in the full-back positions. This defensive line will protect the goal of Raul Rangel, who starts between the sticks.
Erik Lira starts in the defensive midfield position, tasked with breaking up opposition attacks. In front of him will be Chivas teammates Luis Romo and Brian Gutierrez. 17-year-old prodigy Gilberto Mora is an exciting option off the bench, as is Atletico Madrid youngster Obed Vargas.
Julian Quinones, who scored in the last match but was substituted due to an injury, is fit enough to start on the left flank, with Roberto Alvarado starting on the right wing. Veteran forward Raul Jimenez starts as the lone striker.
